Eva Green proved to be more than a match for Daniel Craig’s James Bond in Casino Royale when she played Vesper Lynd, anything but your conventional “Bond Girl.” In 2024, though, she was able to throw herself into an action movie role that was instantly hailed as the “best of the year” before its release, even though it was panned by both critics and audiences when it finally debuted. While the movie failed to live up to its credentials, with Green reuniting with her Bond director Martin Campbell, Green’s action heroine is taking out the competition on the Starz streaming chart.
Director Martin Campbell is more than capable of delivering engaging action sequences, as he has proven from his work on two Bond outings, and the Antonio Banderas movie The Mask of Zorro, but in his gritty 2024 offering, his focus was not on stylized violence, but a real, urgent sense of military missions, the combat that comes with them, and the emotional toll that military missions put upon personnel carrying them out. The director’s approach to gritty, grounded, and immersive action sequences as opposed to over-the-top action that dominates many action movies certainly made the movie seem like it was going to be a hit, but not everyone saw it as a worthwhile way to spend 90 minutes.

The movie is Dirty Angels, and although its Rotten Tomatoes scores of 30% and 29% from critics and audiences, respectively, seem to be a reason to avoid the movie, there were still plenty of people who heaped praise on the film’s action sequences if not much else.
‘Dirty Angels’ Had Potential to Be Another Action Hit

Early buzz around the film was largely positive, with fans of Green adding their thoughts to the trailer’s comments section. The long-delayed movie’s 2024 release came almost two years after the film wrapped in February 2023. It made its debut on VOD services in December 2024.
The film even arrived at the right time, as fans are constantly on the hunt for their next big action movie. While various Jason Statham and Gerard Butler action flicks have become the staple of streaming platforms in recent years, Green’s kick-ass role as the leader of an all-female commando unit on a mission to save a group of girls from Afghan terrorists seemed like a guaranteed success.
However, things did not quite pan out that way, but now, several months later Dirty Angels is cleaning up on the Starz chart. The film is now at the top of streamer’s movie chart, having overtaken the 1995 Chris Tucker crime drama, Dead Presidents. It seems that, like many movies, an appearance on streaming has helped to save Dirty Angels, and put it in front of the eyes of a new audience who seem more than happy to get in on the action.
Alongside Green, Dirty Angels assembles a strong cast of Maria Bakalova, Ruby Rose, Jojo T. Gibbs, Rona-Lee Shimon, Aziz Çapkurt, and Reza Brojerdi. The screenplay is written by Alissa Sullivan Haggis and Jonas McCord; from a story by Jonas McCord and Campbell.
