The 2010s delivered some of the most memorable TV shows of the modern era, giving audiences something impressive to watch every week. From hit dramas like Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad to long-running comedies like The Big Bang Theory, the last decade had no shortage of quality programming.
Also part of that group of hits was Ryan Murphy’s Glee, which ran for 121 episodes over six years and became a cultural phenomenon thanks to its blend of drama, comedy, and hit music. Running from 2009 to 2015, Glee followed high school Spanish teacher Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison), who revived a failing show choir and guided the teenage outcasts through their musical endeavors and real-life struggles.
Featuring some major Hollywood celebrities during its run, Glee became a massive hit, averaging at least 8 million viewers per week in its first four years. This series has been the subject of reboot rumors for years, with many wondering whether it would return to the spotlight. Now, after more than a decade, that time has come.
Reported by Variety, Disney+ and Hulu greenlit a reboot of the hit musical dramedy Glee. While details about the new show have not been revealed as of writing, it will air on both streaming platforms, and multiple stars from the original show are presumed to return. Ryan Murphy, the original show’s creator, recently told Entertainment Tonight that he had “been in touch with around 10 of the original cast members” and confirmed he had written a reboot script.
Seeing Glee return is hardly a surprise, as it became one of the biggest cultural phenomena on TV during its six-year stint on Fox. It covered heavy real-life topics such as race, disability, and mental health, and it gave the cast a chance to cover some of the biggest pop songs ever released. From Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin'” to Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal,” each episode had viewers jamming and tapping their feet while following emotionally charged and meaningful stories from its main cast.
What is not clear yet is whether this series will be a continuation of the original or a reboot with an entirely new story and characters. While many of the original stars have expressed a desire to return to the story, the report did not reveal whether they would be returning in their previous roles.
Additionally, multiple major cast members from the first Glee have passed away, including Cory Monteith, Naya Rivera, and Mark Salling. However, considering how popular Glee still is, the hype is already building quickly for the next chapter in the saga.
