Legendary Disney songwriter Richard M. Sherman, one half of the Sherman Brothers, has died at the age of 95. Sherman and his brother, the late Robert B. Sherman, formed one of the most formidable musical teams in the history of Disney movies, writing many of the studios best known songs from their animated movies, including the Oscar-winning tracks from Mary Poppins.
Sherman died on Saturday, May 25, at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Beverley Hills from “age-related” illness.
Richard and Robert Sherman had a songwriting career that spanned 65 years, and became one of the reasons so many Disney movies were taken to the hearts of audiences across the world. Although best known for songs such as “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”, “The Bear Necessities” and “Everybody Wants to Be a Cat” among many others, the prolific pairing earned themselves no less than three Grammy Awards, two Oscars and 24 albums with a gold and platinum status. Their legendary contribution to The Walt Disney Company was recognized in 1990 when they were inducted as Disney Legends.
Current Disney CEO Bob Iger paid tribute to Sherman following the announcement of his passing. Iger said in a statement:
“Richard Sherman was the embodiment of what it means to be a Disney Legend, creating along with his brother Robert the beloved classics that have become a cherished part of the soundtrack of our lives. We are forever grateful for the mark Richard left on the world, and we extend our deepest condolences to his family.”
