Marvel Studios shared a behind-the-scenes featurette of Dominique Thorne landing the role of Riri Williams in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and the story is much more exciting than the one most ever thought of. She tries out for the role of Shuri many years ago, but the casting team has not lost respect for her energy, now translating to welcoming Ironheart to life in the MCU. The Internet of Thoughts.

The clip revealed the producers expressing admiration for Thorne to be intelligent, funny, and fitting as a genius inventor. But the comments section got a bit heated. There were applause for the casting with “What’s meant for you will always find you,” but there were also some that were not impressed. “We don’t like it; give us Moon Knight,” started one comment and was met with waves of replies: one answer was: “go read some Moon Knight comic books.”
Moon Knight demands kept coming: “Moon knight season 2 NOW!!” Another commented those threats would be jokes if they took a shot every time Marvel called Thorne a genius. And the most-wild? An unengaged Spanish comment meaning “She should not be Iron Heart” versus the English ones that were instant ratio’d. Interesting dynamic, eh?
Not everyone is a hater. Some felt it was cool that her real-life background parallels that of Riri: a first-generation college student, STEM grad, and now going to portray a genius inventor. “The poetry of it is that that’s who I was actually playing,” says Thorne in the clip, and you know she means it. Now we have her literally geeking out over the practical effects for the MK1 suit in the behind-the-scenes footage, which prompted a user to comment “AWESOME” (all caps).
Marvel’s clearly putting serious money into making Ironheart the next big thing, but judging by all those comments, they’re going to have to do a lot of convincing. Between Moon Knight stans, “woke” complaints (eyeroll), and Shuri timeline truthers, it’s already a messy situation out there. But honestly, most would probably agree, seeing Thorne buzzingly excited while talking about MC family membership, that she deserves it. Now we wait to see if the Ironheart show will live up to her potential when it finally hits Disney+.

That sure isn’t the tea, though. The real scoop is Marvel working on practical suits in 2024 instead of CGI-ing everything. That has to earn some respect. Not sure, though, if the character can ever connect with modern viewers, but with Thorne’s genuine excitement level in the making-of footage, they at least have a chance! Here’s hoping that the finished product shuts all doubters up, or at least gives them something new to complain about.
