Despite its ever-changing name, HBO Max subscribers don’t need to worry about the streaming giant changing the quality of the content it both creates and acquires, as the platform is slated to add an exciting array of shows to its catalog in September. From pulse-pounding crime dramas to spook-tacular reality competitions and, of course, hard-hitting docuseries, HBO Max is sure to satisfy all your streaming needs for September 2025.
‘Task’
Streaming September 7
MCU darling Mark Ruffalo is ready to conquer the small screen in the crime drama miniseries Task. He stars as Philadelphia-based FBI agent Tom, chosen to lead an elite task force investigating a string of deadly robberies carried out by an unassuming family man, Robbie (Tom Pelphrey). Created by Brad Ingelsby (Mare of Easttown), the drama is said to be set in the same universe as the Kate Winslet-led show. It is expected to explore the dynamics of interpersonal relationships and human morality.
In fact, Ruffalo himself teased the potential of his character Tom crossing paths with Winslet’s homicide detective Mare Sheehan, telling Deadline: “At some point those two might run into each other in the future, that’s what they’re saying. It’s not set, nothing’s set.” Ruffalo has also described the FBI agent as a good guy, “but complicated. He’s badly damaged but fighting for good,” as he takes command of an investigation looking into the robberies as well as a murder and kidnapping. Task is available for streaming on September 7.
‘Halloween Baking Championship’

Foodies and fans of all things spooky are in for a treat with the latest season of the Food Network’s Halloween Baking Championship. The reality competition crowns the greatest baker of creepy desserts, with the winner receiving $25,000 and a feature in Food Network Magazine. Hosted by John Henson, the 11th installment will feature the baking expertise of chefs Carla Hall, Stephanie Boswell, and Zac Young, who will judge the contestants’ chilling confections.
The two-hour premiere episode “welcomes a batch of ten bakers to a terrible haunted mansion filled with secret passageways and scares around every corner.” According to the Food Network, “The bakers are tested over seven episodes with a series of sinister challenges inspired by the haunted manor, and the most terrifying aspect of all – their own personal fears.” Viewers can expect the latest entry to include some spectacularly spooky creations that will help get them excited for the Halloween season. ‘American Prince: JFK Jr.’
Streaming September 23
Chronicling the life and legacy of John F. Kennedy Jr., the son of President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, the documentary miniseries American Prince: JFK Jr. chronicles the prominent attorney/journalist’s creation of the now-defunct monthly magazine George, which ran issues between September 1995 to January 2001. Both Kennedy’s personal and professional life are explored in the show’s three episodes, from his early years wandering the halls of the White House to his tragic death in 1997 at just 38.
American Prince: JFK Jr. features intimate interviews with Kennedy’s family and his famous friends, including Robert De Niro and Cindy Crawford, while also utilizing extensive archival footage that reveals a side of the prince of “Camelot” not often seen. American Prince was released in light of the upcoming Ryan Murphy anthology series Love Story, which chronicles Kennedy’s romance with Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and has already attracted controversy for its style/casting choices and the ethics surrounding privacy and profiting off of tragic events. Episodes are available for streaming on September 23.
‘Eva Longoria: Searching for Spain’
Streaming September 30
Desperate Housewives alum Eva Longoria is ready to fully immerse herself in the birthplace of her ancestors in the CNN series Eva Longoria: Searching for Spain, in which she takes her taste buds on a culinary adventure as she tries out the many delicacies the country has to offer while also exploring its history and culture. Longoria travels to the different gorgeous regions of Spain to sample each location’s culinary classics, from tortillas in Madrid to blonde beef in Galicia, showcasing all the diversity the country has to offer.
Not only will the actress indulge in Spain’s many tasty cuisines, but she will also reunite with long-lost family members and share a meal based on the recipes of her ancestors. In the show’s trailer, she says, “If you can preserve your food and your recipes, then you can teach the rest of the world who you are.” Longoria splits her time between living in Mexico and Spain, and viewers will get a peek at her home in Marbella and her life outside of Hollywood, with the CNN original serving as the follow-up to her 2023 series Eva Longoria: Searching for Mexico. Stream the docuseries on September 30.
‘My Happy Place’

Travel around the world with some of your favorite celebrities in the CNN original series My Happy Place, which delves into the comfort and tranquility these gorgeous places provide for Hollywood stars. As they explain why these destinations have become their own private sanctuaries, they share their profound personal connections to them. Fans are given an intimate look at where Alan Cumming, Octavia Spencer, Simu Liu, Taraji P. Henson, Billy Porter, and Questlove go to escape the chaos of their everyday lives, with the show taking viewers on an exciting ride.
From Octavia Spencer returning to vibrant New Orleans to Alan Cumming’s childhood oasis in the Scottish Highlands, the six-episode series not only highlights the beauty of these diverse locations but also explores why these locations and their people and cultures mean so much to them. Audiences are given a never-before-seen look at the personal lives of these celebrities in each installment, with Spencer declaring the Louisiana city “feels like an extension of my personality” while Cumming says that the mountainous region brings him “a deep sense of calm.” Check out Happy Place on September 30.
