Although details remain scarce, it appears as if a Shawn Levy-helmed Star Wars film, starring Hollywood A-lister Ryan Gosling, is plowing full-steam ahead. Over the years, many names have been attached to Lucasfilm and the Star Wars saga, with Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy’s name first being discussed in relation to Star Wars back in 2022. However, progress on the project has been somewhat slow, owing partly to the 2023 writers’ strike in Hollywood.
Nonetheless, beginning in 2024, news regarding the project has been more forthcoming. In July 2024, Jonathan Tropper was reported to have joined the team as its writer. Tropper and Levy have had a long-term working relationship, collaborating on several projects together. 2022’s The Adam Project, starring Ryan Reynolds, is the duo’s biggest collaboration to-date. The film claims the fourth spot on Netflix’s Top 10 Most Popular films with 157.6 million views. Star Wars fans have understandably been wary of news involving potential Star Wars movies, given that projects to be helmed by those such as Taika Waititi and Patty Jenkins have not yet materialized. However, offering some promise, the Levy-directed film seems to be heading down a steady path.
Ryan Gosling’s ‘Star Wars’ Movie Will Be a Standalone
Plot details regarding the Shawn Levy directed film remain sparse. However, as per The Hollywood Reporter, it is confirmed that the film will be a standalone. As such, it will reportedly not be connected to the ‘Skywalker Saga,’ which refers to the storylines centered on Luke Skywalker and his father Anakin. Despite these claims, Lucasfilm has made no announcement regarding any deal with Levy or Gosling at the time of writing.
With the Star Wars timeline being extensively vast, and Levy’s emphasis on the film being a standalone work, the Gosling-led film could be set at any point in the timeline. While the vagueness that surrounds the new project offers infinite possibilities and works to arouse excitement, it also creates space for apprehension. How will Levy choose to go about the film? In a interview with Josh Horowitz, Levy said:
“There’s only so many times that Star Wars movies can revisit the same section of the timeline. And so, it has really forced me – because I don’t want to do a Star Wars movie that is redundant to others, nor am I interested in doing one that has to serve another movie. I really wanted to craft something that felt organic to me both in tone and characters. So I think that there is certainly the Force and connection to something bigger than our individual selves and the way that that can make us powerful. Those themes, combined with visual delight and wish fulfillment—that’s Star Wars to me”
Ryan Gosling Is the Only Confirmed Cast Member
At the time of writing, details of a possible cast for Levy’s Star Wars remain under wraps. This is notwithstanding Ryan Gosling, of course, whose involvement in the project was announced by The Hollywood Reporter on January 21, 2025. The outlet reported that the three-time Oscar nominee is “in negotiations to topline the Star Wars feature project that will be directed by Deadpool & Wolverine filmmaker Shawn Levy”.

Given his stardom in the industry, Gosling was rumored to be joining the ninth Star Wars film back in 2012. However, the role never materialized. Some believed that Gosling would take on the role of a young Han Solo, while others believed that the actor would play Luke Skywalker’s son.

As of now, Ryan Gosling’s Star Wars film is still in its infancy stage. However, it is rumored that filming for the project may begin sometime this year. As per Hollywood insider Jeff Sneider, Levy was reportedly holding a September 2025 window open to commence shooting for Star Wars.
Corroborating Sneider’s claims, Deadline also reported in January 2025 that Levy and Tropper had been working on their Star Wars film for two years. Accordingly, as per the outlet, an untitled Star Wars movie is on the release calendar for December 17, 2027. The film will follow 2026’s Star Wars movie, The Mandalorian and Grogu, scheduled for release on May 22.
