Obi-Wan Kenobi brings Ewan McGregor back to the Star Wars franchise, and this time around has been a better experience for the star.
The Star Wars prequel movies were something of a mixed bag for most fans of the franchise, and when it comes to working on the movies, Ewan McGregor found them less rewarding than his upcoming return in the Disney+ Obi-Wan Kenobi series. While the next installment of The Mandalorian is always on the mind of Star Wars fans, it is hard to not get hyped about Obi-Wan Kenobi as it is clearly one of the most eagerly anticipated releases in the recent years of the franchise.
Following Ewan McGregor’s Jedi a decade on from the catastrophic events of Revenge of the Sith, Kenobi is still keeping an eye on a young Luke Skywalker but has other worries to contend with as the Empire attempts to hunt down all remaining Jedi and wipe them out. Over the course of the series Kenobi will come up against the Empire’s Grand Inquisitor and will also once more face Darth Vader in what has been frequently referenced as the “rematch of the century.” While we will likely have to wait until the finale of the series for this face off, there is set to be a lot of surprises coming before we reach that point.

While speaking to Total Film (via IGN) ahead of the series’ release on Disney+, McGregor revealed that when it comes to comparing his Star Wars experiences, his return to the franchise is more rewarding thanks to the writing on the production. The actor said:
“It was nice to come back and to bridge that gap between me and Alec Guinness. I got as much, or more, out of playing him this time than I did in the first three movies put together. That’s to do with the writing, and the people we were making the series with, and the technology, and how different everything is.”

Ewan McGregor’s comments about finding his recent experience of making the Obi-Wan Kenobi series a rewarding one compared to his movie appearances are made with good reason. Overall, the prequel movies were dragged down by clichéd writing, and dialogue that sometimes bordered on being childishly theatrical and just downright silly. In the new era of Star Wars on Disney+, the likes of Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have come together to ensure that the series doesn’t suffer the same fate. Whether writing, directing or simply consulting, the current team behind many of the Disney+ Star Wars projects is on the ball when it comes to making Star Wars content that fans actually want to see.
Bringing back both McGregor and Hayden Christensen for the Obi-Wan Kenobi series ensures that the characters last seen two decades ago will be instantly recognized and welcomed back by fans. With James Earl Jones almost certainly providing the voice of Darth Vader, there is every possibility that Obi-Wan Kenobi could continue to push the bar for quality Star Wars content, and could end up challenging The Mandalorian as the most popular franchise series on Disney+.
