Dua Lipa and stylist Lorenzo Posocco are intentional about researching their red carpet style moments, and that’s truer than ever for Lipa’s latest look at the 2022 Grammys, where she arrived in an archival Versace bondage gown from 1992. Supermodel Cindy Crawford, who wore the dress when she was 26, commented on the design’s history with an Instagram post. “Then and now 🖤 Timeless,” she wrote underneath a shot of herself at the 1992 MTV VMAs. Back then, Crawford wore the strappy number with a pair of classic black pumps and a red ribbon pin to show her support of those affected by the ongoing AIDS crisis.
Meanwhile, Lipa’s own take was decorated with piles of gold chainlink Medusa jewelry — both necklaces and bracelets — to play into the current Y2K-inspired logomania trend and represent Versace’s signature emblem. Lipa also accessorized with black strappy sandals and Bulgari diamonds in her earrings and rings.
As it turns out, supermodel Tyra Banks actually wore this Versace bondage dress before Crawford or Lipa — that was at the Rhythm of Life Fashion Ball in aid of the Rainforest Foundation on May 31, 1992, in London. Banks showed off every angle of the mesh, corseted bodice while walking the runway at that event, amping up the gold hardware details with gold hairpins and thin hoops. Additionally, Crawford slipped back into her bondage dress for a second time — merely five days after her appearance at the VMAs — for the catwalk at the Rock N’ Rule Benefit for AmFAR, which was hosted by Versace.
While we don’t know who will get their hands on this famous piece of fashion history next, the effect of repurposing vintage pieces these days is clear, especially for young Hollywood stars who enjoy refreshing the narrative and making a statement about sustainability through their clothing choices. As for Lipa, the superstar ended up swapping the bondage dress for a safety-pin minidress and latex leggings on stage at the Grammys and, later in the evening, opting for Balenciaga lace at the afterparty. Ahead, track the full history of the 1992 Versace bondage dress.
