A tracksuit isn’t typical red carpet attire, but that’s not stopping Pete Davidson. As part of the casual aesthetic we’re dubbing “Adam-Sandler-core,” the comedian stepped out in a blue velour sweatsuit for the June 5 premiere of “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” in NYC. Staying true to theme, the comfy two piece set featured a zip-up jacket with an airbrush illustration of a transformer, which Davidson tastefully paired with chunky Asics sneakers, black sunglasses, and a matching “It’s a New York Thing” baseball cap from the 75th Anniversary Capsule with the NBA.
Davidon’s cobalt look — an ironic juxtaposition to the designer ensembles worn by other celebrities at the same event — was a fantastic throwback to the monochrome velour tracksuits worn by icons like Paris Hilton and Britney Spears during the Y2K era. The loungewear simultaneously paid tribute to one of the movie’s most famous characters while playing off the nostalgia of the early aughts. Davidson’s nonchalance about the red carpet dress code also harkened back to Adam Sandler’s famously laidback style — no matter how formal the occasion.
In a March 23 interview on “The Tonight Show,” close friend and costar, Jennifer Aniston, perfectly summed up Sandler’s fashion sense, recounting what he once wore to a “nice dinner” in Italy. “He shows up in basketball shorts. Satin basketball shorts with white piping, and Nike high tops, and a turquoise velour [shirt] that had no relationship to the [bottom] half,” she said incredulously.
In addition to basketball shorts, Sandler has also worn T-shirts, hoodies, jeans, and yes, a velour zip-up of his own, to various high-profile shows and ceremonies. But if Davidson’s colorful sweatsuit is any indication, this kind of casual dressing might just have the potential to take the red carpet by storm. And if it does, we’ll know exactly who to thank.
