The Cinema Society Screens Robbie Williams Must-See Film “Better Man”

Though (sadly) not as famous in the United States as he is internationally, Robbie Williams is a bona fide superstar.  The British pop star reveals all in the upcoming film, Better Man, based on his big ups and big downs in the limelight.  Rufus Wainwright and Cinema Society hosted a special screening of the film at Metrograph on the Lower East Side on Wednesday night. William was in attendance and welcomed guests with his charming and self deprecating personality.  “A lot of you are from America and not aware of what a big deal I am,” Williams cheekily told the crowd before the film started. “This makes me very sad. If you’re with anyone from outside of your country, just tap them on the shoulder and ask them about me and my storied history.” And what a story….

The biopic, directed by Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman), tells his story tale from his perspective as he deals with fame, addiction, and family issues with a unique twist. The lead actor playing Williams is a CGI monkey (Why? You’ll have to interpret that yourself) in a cast of real humans who play his band mates, family members, and former love, Nicole Appleton of All Saints fame. The monkey is so real you forget you’re watching a monkey after about 20 minutes and fall for this incredible story.

Wednesday’s screening welcomed  Wainwright (who also moderated a conversation with Williams afterwards), Michael Bonini, Grace Cotton, Rebecca Dayan, Kim Director, Sante D’Orazio, Deborra-Lee Furness, Nolan Funk, Montego Glover, Jenna Leigh Green, Valesca Guerrand-Hermes and Jake Davies, Nur Khan, Hunter Kohl, Rock Kohli, Karen Duffy Lambros, Don Lee, Keke Lindgard, Alex and Keytt Lundqvist, Amber Martin, Hal Rubenstein, Rufus Sewell, Sam Shaffer, Luke Slattery,  Lucy Sumner, Mick Szal, Ulboss, Frederique Van Der Wal, Daniel Benedict & Cinema Society founder Andrew Saffir.

At the after party at Metrograph, Williams worked the room and introduced himself to guests and took selfies. The superstar showed he’s not only a Better Man, he just might be the nicest man.

The film hit theatres on December 25th in the US.
