Jason lives…again. Everyone’s favorite sex-hating, machete-wielding, unstoppable supernatural serial killer is coming to the small screen in his first TV series, Crystal Lake, a prequel to the Friday the 13th franchise – but he will not be quite as monstrous as you remember him. After more than a decade in limbo, the franchise that wanted to tap into the slasher vein opened by several 70s movies, including the mostly slash-free Halloween, is finally overcoming its torrid legal battles and actually producing more content. And the A24 series has now secured its new Jason Voorhees actor.
Unlike his nightmare-making sparring partner, Freddy Krueger, Jason has always been interchangeable when it comes to who plays him thanks to his hockey mask and increasingly decomposed face. However, everyone has their favorite Jason, with many citing Kane Hodder as the best person to ever embody the character after playing in four movies and a video game. That means that someone still has big shoes to fill, and that person will be Chucky and Long Bright River star Callum Vinson…who is currently aged 11.

‘Friday the 13th’ Series Gets Filming Update That Suggests This Project Won’t Be Slashed
Creator Brad Caleb Kane posted a much-needed ‘Crystal Lake’ update on Instagram.
Yes, the next iteration of Jason will not have to compete with his predecessors, as Crystal Lake is mainly focusing its story on Jason’s mother, and the first movie’s actual killer, Pamela Voorhees, played by Linda Cardellini, yet, the mixed rumors of the show’s plot suggest that the youngster could end up being responsible for several killings himself.
What Is the Story ‘Crystal Lake’ Is Trying To Tell?
Paramount Pictures
When Crystal Lake was originally announced to be a prequel, it seemed that Jason was going to be pretty much out of the picture. The history of the Friday the 13th saga has never really cared much about logic – considering the first movie features Jason in child form, rising from the lake in the final moments, but becoming a hulking brute of a man by the time Friday the 13th Part II comes around – and so far there seem to be conflicting reports about the plot of the new series.
Having gone through numerous changes of personnel, it is perhaps not surprising that the plot seems a bit muddled. Previously, it was reported that Crystal Lake would focus on Pamela in the lead up to the death of her son, Jason. When Jason drowns after camp counselors neglect to watch over him, Pamela goes on a killing spree to make them pay. This all ties in with the existing mythology of the franchise.
However, it has then been suggested that Jason actually survived his drowning, and witnessed his mother being killed by one of the counselors, leading to him going on to avenge her death by killing everyone he crosses paths with. In many ways, this seems to pitch the show as more of a remake of the original Friday the 13th, with just a little bit of preamble about Jason’s actual death. For now, it looks like fans will just have to wait a little longer to get a clear idea of how the storyline will be adapted into series form.
Crystal Lake has Vinson listed as a recurring guest star. Meanwhile, Nick Cordileone, Joy Suprano, Danielle Kotch, and Phoenix Parnevik have joined the cast as Ralph, Rita, Claudette, and Barry – several of the counselors who encounter Pamela Voorhees’ wrath.
