Grand Theft Auto 6 parody confirms release after PlayStation ban

A parody game of Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to launch this summer on Steam, despite being removed from the PlayStation store.

Grand Taking Ages is “the world’s first reality-based game development simulator,” say developers Violartes.

“Your dreams of creating the next gaming masterpiece collide head-first with actual reality,” reads the description. “Transform from a starry-eyed indie developer into a caffeinated coding warrior battling against impossible deadlines, mysterious bugs, and the ever-present temptation to add ‘just one more feature.’ Will you create the next gaming sensation, or will your project join the hallowed halls of ‘Coming Soon™’ legends?”

The game was originally unveiled last year with Grand Theft Auto 6-inspired artwork and a list of fake awards. Back then, Grand Taking Ages was described (via IGN) as “the Most Anticipated Game About Making The Most Anticipated Game,” but the product was swiftly removed from the PlayStation store.

Now Violartes have announced Grand Taking Ages is set to launch July 2025 via Steam. Speaking to IGN, developers said they have been through a “thorough” review process and made several changes to the parody, including the removal of the 6 from the name “to clearly differentiate Grand Taking Ages from the original inspiration of Grand Theft Auto 6 and to emphasise its unique direction.”

“We approached Steam differently by engaging with their team about the concept of our game before officially submitting it,” the studio explained. “This allowed us to get their perspective early on, ensuring alignment with their guidelines.” They also used projects such as Grand Theft Hamlet to back up their game. “These examples showcase how parody can celebrate and entertain within existing genres while remaining creative and engaging.”

Grand Theft Auto 6 was officially unveiled at the end of 2023 with Rockstar promising the game would be released in 2025. However it still doesn’t have a release date. Some fans believe that will change next week though, thanks to an apparent code in a teaser for Grand Theft Auto Online.

In other news, the first pre-orders for Switch 2 accessories are here – even though Nintendo has yet to confirm a release date for the new console.
