Green Lantern Director Says He Never Should Have Made the Movie

Martin Campbell’s 2011 Green Lantern movie still stands as one of the worse superhero movies made, and the director doesn’t exactly disagree.

Warner Bros. Pictures

When it comes to superhero movies that failed to take flight, there are none remembered more than 2011’s Green Lantern. Starring Ryan Reynolds in the lead role, the film hasn’t just gained critical and audience mauling, but has also been constantly mocked by its star. Not it seems that director Martin Campbell doesn’t really have much of a different opinion to the masses and has admitted that perhaps his first foray into the world of superheroes shouldn’t have happened at all.

Speaking to Screen Rant about his upcoming movie, Memory, the subject of Green Lantern obviously came up as the director was asked whether he could ever consider bringing another superhero movie to screens. It seems that while he has had plenty of movies that have redeemed him in the last decade, he fully believes that Green Lantern is simply one of those movies he should not have made. He said:

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“No, I’m not good at superhero movies. Green Lantern? People didn’t like that movie, and frankly, I shouldn’t have done it. I did it because I’ve never done one. You work just as hard on the movies that really are not successful as you do on the ones that are. I think there are people better qualified than me to do a superhero movie.”

The opinion is certainly one that many would agree with, as there have been very few people who have a good word to say about the original big screen outing for the DC hero, and it has really taken a long time for anyone to think about attempting another full-blown Green Lantern project based on the terrible reception of that film.#

HBO Max’s Green Lantern Corps Could Finally Revive the Franchise

Warner Bros. Pictures

Green Lantern Corps has been in production for a little while now, and it looks like the HBO Max project will be coming to fruition soon. From early reports last year, the new show will be a 10-episode series and will take Green Lantern down a darker path than the 2011 movie. This usually means good things where DC projects are concerned, and it only seems to be when someone tries to make them light and airy that everything falls apart.

Following the dismal performance of the original Green Lantern movie, the only way a new iteration of the characters who have borne the ring of the hero could work would be to forget all about the previous attempt and going for something a little deeper in the telling. For that reason, it has been said that Green Lantern Corps will be more akin to the Watchmen series and will feature a number of Lanterns including Guy Gardner, Bree Jarta and Alan Scott, who would be regulars throughout the series.

There has been little information released about where exactly the project is, other than some character descriptions that had been put out for casting toward the end of last year. With most of Warner Bros. attention on their upcoming movies, it seems that we can only wait for more details as it emerges.
