Grizzlies’ Jackson injured after signing $240M extension

Memphis Grizzlies big man Jaren Jackson Jr. underwent a procedure to address a turf toe injury in his right foot, the team announced Wednesday.

The 25-year-old will be re-evaluated in 12 weeks. That timeline places Jackson’s reassessment toward the end of September, just before the start of training camp. The Grizzlies are yet to announce their 2025-26 preseason schedule.

Jackson suffered the injury “while participating in a live basketball run offsite,” the Grizzlies said Tuesday. Further evaluation by doctors showed that he needed surgery to correct the issue.

News of the setback came one day after Jackson reportedly agreed to a five-year, $240-million extension with the Grizzlies. He will be under contract with the club through 2029-30, though the final season hinges on a player option.

The former Defensive Player of the Year has been afflicted by major injuries in multiple offseasons throughout his seven-year career.

Prior to the 2024-25 campaign, Jackson strained his hamstring during the Grizzlies’ first training camp practice, which caused him to miss the team’s first two games of the regular season three weeks later. He was sidelined for the first 14 games of the 2022-23 season while recovering from June surgery to repair a stress fracture in his right foot.

After suffering a meniscus tear in August 2020 in the bubble, the Michigan State product didn’t make his 2020-21 season debut until April 2021.

Jackson, 25, averaged 22.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game as Memphis’ starting center in 2024-25. The New Jersey native was named to his third career All-Defensive team after the season.
