‘GTA 6’ fans think a beloved throwback map is making a comeback

GTA 6 fans think beloved throwback map Liberty City will feature in the new game.

After Grand Theft Auto 6 was delayed from late 2025 to May 26, 2026, developers Rockstar Games shared an “unprecedented” amount of information about the game.

As well as a new trailer, the official GTA 6 website was updated to include character descriptions, location overviews and more than 70 screenshots from the game.

The trailer has been viewed more than 103million times since it was uploaded last Tuesday (May 6) and has also given The Pointer Sisters a huge boost in streaming numbers after their iconic track ‘Hot Together’ was used. 

Over the past week, fans have also been combing through all the new information, looking for clues about what they can expect from Grand Theft Auto 6. One theory is that an upgraded version of Liberty City will feature. The fan-favourite map was first introduced in 2008’s Grand Theft Auto 4 and made a return in 2009 spin-off GTA: Chinatown Wars. 

One viral thread detailing the rumours explains that a Liberty City license plate features in Grand Theft Auto 6’s trailer two, a Liberty Cit hat can be seen in a screenshot and it looks like players will be able to take part in cage fights, which were first introduced in GTA 4.

Protagonist Lucia is also confirmed to have family in Liberty City, while Rockstar has announced there are more locations than the six they’ve already revealed.

It comes after Rockstar games shut down an ambitious fan-made project that would have made GTA 4’s Liberty City map playable in Grand Theft Auto 5. “If it’s not returning anytime soon, then why takedown a mod,” asked one fan.  Liberty City wouldn’t be the only throwback either –  Vice City is making a return after it was first introduced in the 2002 game of the same name. 

Other fans aren’t convinced though. Liberty City is based on New York City while Grand Theft Auto 6’s Leonida is based on Florida, with more than a thousand miles between the two places. However a Liberty City map could always act as a prologue to the main game, to show how Lucia ended up in prison.

Following the trailer launch last week, Grand Theft Auto 6 fans are convinced they know who Lucia and Jason’s voice actors are.

In other news, Hideo Kojima has confirmed that Caroline Polachek has written the title track for Death Stranding 2: On The Beach.
