Guy Ritchie Teases Jason Statham & Aubrey Plaza Duo in Operation Fortune

Director Guy Ritchie’s upcoming spy flick Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre will pair action movie icon Jason Statham with cynically deadpan comedy legend Aubrey Plaza, with the filmmaker teasing the potential of this unorthodox duo. Statham and Plaza will lead the Guy Ritchie movie, no doubt both demonstrating their respective talents for throwing punches and landing quips.

“It felt fresh and she felt capable,” Ritchie says of casting Aubrey Plaza, who is best known for her role in the sitcom Parks and Recreation and has yet to lend her talents to the action movie genre. Not only was Plaza able to keep up with the action superstar that is The Stath, but she impressed Ritchie throughout the process, with the director concluding; “I am more than delighted with the result.”

As well as bringing the duo of Statham and Plaza to the big screen, Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre gave Ritchie an excuse to work with the action icon again. “The truth is I wanted another alibi to give me a reason to work with Jason again because I enjoy collaborating with him so much,” Ritchie said of his own Jason Statham team-up. The director and actor have so far combined their talents on the likes of Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, Revolver, and most recently the revenge thriller Wrath of Man.

Plaza has previously declared her excitement over starring alongside Jason Statham, with the comedian and actress eager to show her action hero side. “I cannot wait to shoot this movie,” Plaza said. “I hope that it will allow me to be a bada** CIA agent with the ultimate bada**. There’s no one more bada** than Statham – and I’m coming for Statham. He better watch out. Because I’m going to destroy him, and he’s going to like it.”

Previously known as Five Eyes, Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre finds Jason Statham starring as the wonderfully named Orson Fortune, a name so obviously sublime that it was ultimately incorporated into the movie’s title. Described as a “super spy” (could he be anything less?), Orson Fortune and his team of top operatives recruit Hollywood’s biggest movie star, Danny Francesco, to help them on an undercover mission to stop billionaire arms broker Greg Simmonds from selling a deadly new weapons technology that threatens to disrupt the world order.

Guy Ritchie also discussed the title change, which ended up being much more flamboyant than the fairly typical Five Eyes. “You have to look up the meaning of ‘Ruse de guerre;’ it’s too ironic a premise to ignore,” Ritchie said. “Somehow only the French have managed to capture the meaning within a term, ‘the accepted unorthodox approach to war’ which is really what our film is about.”

Director Guy Ritchie will be working from a script written by himself alongside Ivan Atkinson, and Marn Davies. The filmmaker will also reteam with several other actors alongside Statham, including The Gentlemen stars Bugzy Malone and Hugh Grant, the latter of which will no doubt be chewing the scenery as “billionaire arms broker” Greg Simmonds. Wrath of Man’s Josh Hartnett is also on board and will star as “Hollywood’s biggest movie star” Danny Francesco, with Saw and The Princess Bride’s Cary Elwes and Lourdes Faberes making up the rest of the supporting cast.

Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre is due to hit theaters on January 21, 2022, from STXfilms. This comes to us from EW.
