The Harry Potter franchise is currently going through some major changes, as HBO’s reboot series continues expanding its cast. The most iconic characters from J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World have now been cast for the upcoming TV remake, including the titular Harry Potter himself. From the moment the series was announced back in 2023, fans have wondered which, if any, of the original cast from Warner Bros.’ classic film franchise will return for the reboot. Many are hoping for at least one of the original stars to make a cameo in the reboot, and some of the actors are even open to the idea. But acting veteran and one of the few people to escape from Azkaban, Gary Oldman (Sirius Black in Harry Potter), has bad news for fans hoping for a cameo.
Gary Oldman recently sat down with Variety to test whether he knew the most famous lines from his incredible filmography. After being given one of Sirius Black’s lines from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and instantly getting it right, Gary Oldman was asked about HBO’s Harry Potter reboot. “My personal feeling is they’re not gonna go anywhere near people that were connected to the original,” Oldman said of the original Potter stars making cameos in HBO’s reboot. Despite believing that HBO will want nothing to do with him and his former castmates, Gary Oldman would love to return to Hogwarts, but with a serious promotion, saying:
“I would have fancied a go at Dumbledore. I’m getting up there now, it’s the right age for Dumbledore.”

‘Harry Potter’ Set Images Reveal Another Iconic Location Is Being Rebuilt for the Series
New set photos from HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ reboot series have made their way online, showing the construction of a key spot from the books and films.
Unfortunately, that faculty position has already been filled by John Lithgow, who will play Albus Dumbledore in the reboot. But Gary Oldman isn’t bitter about not appearing in HBO’s reboot. In fact, he’s one of the Harry Potter fans in favor of the series. As beloved as the movies are by general audiences, diehard fans of the books dislike how much was cut during the adaptation. Gary Oldman hopes that HBO’s series will finally bring that cut content to the screen. “I’m actually very intrigued to see it,” he said. “So much of the books were cut.”
Gary Oldman Reveals How the ‘Harry Potter’ Movies Came to Be
Harry Potter is now one of the best-selling young fantasy series, and one of the most beloved movie franchises of all time. But it wasn’t always that way. “They were pretty small fry in the beginning,” Oldman said of the Harry Potter books’ early popularity. “I wasn’t really aware of them until I got cast. The assistant to David Heyman, who produced them, had read them and said, ‘I think these would make a good film. You should take one of them home and read them.’ And he did… Well, he said he did.”
HBO’s Harry Potter reboot hasn’t been given an official release date yet. Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout will play Harry, Hermione, and Ron, respectively. Alongside the aforementioned Lithgow, the series also stars Nick Frost, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu, Johnny Flynn, Daniel Rigby, Bel Powley, and Katherine Parkinson.
