How HBO Max’s Sex and the City Reboot Will Move Forward Without Kim Cattrall’s Samantha Jones

It is the day and age of reboots, reunions and revivals. In December 2020, one was announced for Sex and the City. In development at HBO Max, this limited series will be made up of 10 episodes, will be titled “And Just Like That…” and will feature Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis reprising their roles, as well as serving as executive producers. But one person will be missing. And it’s a big hole to fill.

Obviously, this is a bit different than the original series, as Kim Cattrall, aka Samantha Jones, is nowhere to be seen. Since the news came out, fans have been speculating about her absence. Did she move? Was there a falling out? Is she dead? While viewers will have to wait until the first episode to find out where Samanta is within this fictional universe, some insight has been provided on the situation.

“Just as in real life, people come into your life, people leave. Friendships fade, and new friendships start,” HBO Max chief content officer Casey Bloys explained to TVLine. “So I think it is all very indicative of the real stages, the actual stages of life.” Bloys went on to say that the team is trying to give a real glimpse into what life is and would be like for a 50-something woman in New York City. “So it should all feel somewhat organic, and the friends that you have when you’re 30, you may not have when you’re 50.”

While Cattrall’s colorful character will certainly be missed, there is some exciting news: The stylish social circle of Carrie Bradshaw, Miranda Hobbes and Charlotte York will be expanding to include six new characters, and three of them will be series regulars and women of color.

Furthermore, the show’s writing team, which is led by returning showrunner Michael Patrick King, will have more diversity; the writing credits listed on IMDb include Rachna Fruchbom, Keli Goff, Samantha Irby, Julie Rottenberg and Elisa Zuritsky. “[Parker and King] didn’t want to tell a story with all-white writers or an all-white cast,” Bloys stated. “It’s not reflective of New York. So they are being very, very conscious about understanding that New York has to reflect the way New York looks today.”

IMBd goes on to say that “And Just Like That…” will focus on the three main characters “as they navigate the journey from the complicated reality of life and friendship in their 30s to the even more complicated reality of life and friendship in their 50s.”

The release date of this new HBO Max project is not yet known, but some teasers have been shared by the original and returning cast members. On January 10, Parker uploaded a video on Instagram, saying “I couldn’t help but wonder… where are they now?” Davis’ said, “Anything is possible… Meet you there!” And Nixon’s post was captioned with, “You, me, New York… anything is possible.”

Where are they? What all is possible? The world will soon get all of these answers and more, as “SATC” returns to fans’ lives in a whole new and exciting wayon HBO Max! This news arrives from The Muse.
