Hugh Grant has had somewhat of a renaissance (or Grantaissance, if you will) in recent years. After some years as a comedic talent in England, Grant reigned supreme as the go-to British heartthrob. Movies like Nine Months, Sense and Sensibility, Mickey Blue Eyes, Love Actually, About a Boy, Notting Hill, and, of course, Bridget Jones’s Diary cemented Grant’s status as a romantic leading man. Two decades later, Grant is experiencing a career resurgence as a brilliant supporting actor, mastering mostly mean roles from the sidelines with wit and charisma.
This is largely thanks to Guy Ritchie, who has helped reinvent Grant through movies like The Man from U.N.C.L.E., The Gentlemen, and Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre. Since then, he has shined in films like Wonka and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (and cameos like Glass Onion). It’s a great new look for the actor, who continues it in the new comedy, Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story. His performance is based on the real-life actor Thurl Ravenscroft, a cocky thespian who portrayed Tony the Tiger for five decades. Grant clearly relished the opportunity, having a great deal of fun portraying Ravenscroft in Jerry Seinfeld’s Netflix film, Unfrosted.

“The older I get, the more I enjoy playing twisted, angry little men, and here was a perfect one,” explained Grant to MovieWeb. Still suave and handsome, Grant nonetheless seems more introspective and philosophical as a sexagenarian. He described his Unfrosted character to MovieWeb:
His poisonous, disappointed rage at the way he’s ended up in life. I enjoy those guys. And his shocking vanity and narcissism. Why do I like playing those guys? Is that me? The older I get, the more I wonder if I’m a monster.

Hugh Grant Says the New Bridget Jones Has ‘The Best Script of the Four Movies’
Hugh Grant has high praise for the upcoming Bridget Jones sequel Mad About the Boy. According to Grant, the script for the fourth installment in the Bridget Jones franchise is the best one yet. While discussing Unfrosted with MovieWeb, Grant took a minute to address the upcoming movie:
“It’s a really good script. In my humble opinion,
it’s the best script of the four films so far
. It’s based on a book that Helen Fielding wrote, which was inspired by her having to bring up her two children by herself after her husband died. It’s very funny, but it’s also incredibly moving.
I just read the latest draft on the plane yesterday and was properly crying. The air stewardess was very surprised.

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy welcomes back Renée Zellweger as the titular character. The film, based on the 2013 Helen Fielding novel of the same name, catches up with Jones, who is now in her 50s and a single mom following the tragic death of her husband, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth).

Grant starred in 2001’s Bridget Jones’s Diary as Daniel Cleaver, Jones’ former boss and ex, returning for the 2004 sequel The Edge of Reason. Grant did not appear in the franchise’s third film, Bridget Jones’s Baby (ironically, he was not pleased with the script). For most of that film, Grant’s character is thought to be dead, but a newspaper headline shown at the end of the film implies Cleaver is alive. About returning to the Bridget Jones universe, Grant told Entertainment Tonight:
It just suddenly sprang out of, you know, Helen writing another book. Hopefully, we’re not too ancient. I don’t do much now, I’ve just got a few scenes.
Bridget Jones 4 Is Set to Release on Valentine’s Day 2025

The character of Bridget Jones was created from Fielding’s 1995 column for The Independent, which was later collected for the book Bridget Jones’s Diary. The first film premiered in 2001, and went on to be a box office and critical success, earning Zellweger her first Academy Award nod and making Jones a beloved character in the rom-com sphere.
News of a fourth Bridget Jones film began circulating earlier this month, leaving fans in a tizzy of excitement. As it turns out, the wait for Mad About the Boy won’t be too long, and it’s expected to premiere in theaters and stream on Peacock on Valentine’s Day 2025. The romantic comedy is scheduled to begin production in May 2024.
Emma Thompson, who appeared in and co-wrote Bridget Jones’s Baby, will also return for Mad About the Boy. The returning trio is joined by Bridget Jones newcomers Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave) and Leo Woodall (One Day). Michael Morris (To Leslie) will direct.
