  • The creator of “The Crown” hints at the possibility of a prequel series.
  • The final season of “The Crown” will sensitively recreate Princess Diana’s passing, with the producers emphasizing their thoughtfulness and respect for her story.
  • The sixth season of “The Crown” will cover major events from 1997 to 2005, including Princess Diana’s death, Tony Blair’s premiership, and Prince William and Kate Middleton’s early relationship.

Peter Morgan, the creator behind The Crown, recently revealed that he may not be finished telling the story of the British royal family and hinted at the possibility of a prequel series following the sixth and final season of the popular Netflix show. While chatting with Variety, Morgan admitted that he has an idea for a potential prequel series, but noted that another show wouldn’t happen right away. Morgan told the outlet when asked if he would ever consider a prequel:

“I do have an idea. But first, I need to do some other things. Second, it would need a unique set of circumstances to come together.”

The series creator went on to say that his ideas for a prequel would predate the events of The Crown. However, Morgan did not go any deeper into the details.

“If I were to go back into The Crown, it would definitely be to go back in time.”

Earlier this summer, The Crown producers Suzanne Mackie and Andy Harries opened up about how the sixth and final season would address the passing of Princess Diana, which occurred back in 1997 and was the result of the injuries she sustained from a car accident.

Princess Diana’s Passing Was ‘Delicately’ & ‘Thoughtfully’ Recreated

Producer Suzanne Mackie also revealed that the final season would sensitively recreate the accident. An event which had a huge impact on both the Royal Family and the United Kingdom.

“The show might be big and noisy, but we’re not. We’re thoughtful people and we’re sensitive people. There were very careful, long conversations about how we were going to do it… The audience will judge it in the end, but I think it’s been delicately, thoughtfully recreated. Elizabeth Debicki is an extraordinary actress and she was so thoughtful and considerate. She loved Diana. There’s a huge amount of respect from us all, I hope that’s evident.”

The final season of The Crown is expected to take place between 1997 and 2005 and cover major events including the death of the Princess of Wales, the premiership of Tony Blair, and the early days of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s relationship. Bertie Carvel will portray Blair, Meg Bellamy is set to play Kate Middleton, and Ed McVey will portray Prince William. Other cast members include Luter Ford as Prince Harry, Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip, Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret, Dominic West as Princes Charles, and Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana.

The sixth season of The Crown will be split into two parts with ‘Part 1’ releasing on November 16th and ‘Part 2’ debuting on December 14th. The first four episodes will “depict a relationship blossoming between Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed before a fateful car journey has devastating consequences.”

The synopsis for the second part (which features six episodes) reads, “Prince William tries to integrate back into life at Eton in the wake of his mother’s death as the monarchy has to ride the wave of public opinion.” And “as she reaches her Golden Jubilee, the Queen reflects on the future of the monarchy with the marriage of Charles and Camilla and the beginnings of a new Royal fairy tale in William and Kate.”
