The Ohio Senator J.D. Vance tagged one comedian, Theo Von, in a cryptic post on social media and set off hysteria ranging from jokes to serious accusations. The tweet with few lines, stating, “Slow news day, what are we even going to talk about?” and featuring a photo of the two sitting together spurred immediate speculations about what sort of collaboration or some hidden motive their meeting could possibly entail.

There was a momentary puzzlement over the timing of this post of Vance’s, in the wake of the news that he was recently Trump’s running mate. One of the responses connected it to the current political tension, bluntly asking, “Why you with a Jew hater,” referring to some controversies that some comments made by Von have stirred. This, of course, ignited a long-analyzed thread about Von’s past controversial statements-a few of which accuse the Jews of media control, which some labeled as an antisemitic trope.
Others went on jabbering more suggestively about the real nature of this relationship. “How long have you two been dating, and who made the first move?” was one of the quips. “Need wet wipes to clean up the sofa afterward,” said the other. The teasing went on: “Did their dads break up or something?”, presumably nodding to the casually intimate vibe of that photo.
Some launched retaliatory attacks, mostly attaching Vance to Trump’s legal troubles. “Your boss being a pedo and you not caring?” was an especially biting reply, referring to the Epstein case. Another dragged in foreign policy, asking about “the genocide you guys are fueling” in reference to Vance’s hawkish positions.
This shows that the very fact that a seemingly innocuous social media post makes headlines nowadays is testimony to how charged the whole political atmosphere is—a kitchen-fire-lamp. Whatever little light the Senator infused into this exchange may well have been overshadowed by accusations concerning the very nature of his relationship with Von, going right up to serious geopolitical charges. The senator has also declined to straighten out just why those two had met, so at this point, all wild speculation ensues about what it actually means: a media shot? Political strategizing? Or just two public faces catching up?

One thing that is glaringly obvious from these responses is just how quickly it got heavy after having been light-The embodiment of our present cultural moment, with a few exceptions, where the black hole emerges around any interaction. That reaction span—from one end of the spectrum seriously wondering what policy talks they are about to have all the way to blatant, ridiculous personal attacks-demonstrates that in the world of today, an emerging social media stars loses control of any narrative as soon as it is uploaded to their page. Whether Vance could have predicted such a reaction, or this little moment was supposed to capture a simple exchange, is anybody’s guess, but the reaction itself stands as evidence of the simple fact that today, “slow news day” is an extinct phenomenon.
