Jensen Ackles Reveals The Winchester Five-Season Plan Before Its Cancelation

It seems that Mary and John were going to hunt monsters and demons for a long time before The CW cut short their plans. The Winchesters, the latest Supernatural spinoff hit the network screen in 2022, produced by one of the stars of the original show, Jensen Ackles, and it seemed that it would finally be able to expand the universe of the series after several failed attempts. However, the curse is still on.

Earlier this week, The CW announced that The Winchesters would not continue after having aired only one season, falling into the wave of cancelations along with Kung Fu and Walker: Independence, a spinoff of another series starring one of the former Supernatural stars, Jared Padalecki.

The Winchesters is set years before the events of the original show, following the adventures of young Mary and John, parents of Supernatural’s stellar siblings. Just as their children would in the future, the couple team up to battle monsters, ghosts, demons, and other creatures, which will later become the family business.

Following the cancelation, Ackles joined the fandom in starting a campaign to save the show, as they had big plans for the couple’s storyline. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, the producer explained that they had a five-season plan for the project, and that they will look to find where they can execute it:

“We were talking not only about the story and where we wanted to take our cast, we were talking about who we were going to bring back from the mothership. We were putting together a lot of tricks to keep up our sleeves and keep it exciting, not just for the new fans, but for the returning fans as well. Hopefully we get to execute that. I just think that there’s a way to keep this alive and it would be a shame to let that go.”

In addition, Ackles talked about the idea they had to tieThe Winchesters with the return of Supernatural in the future:

“And then we don’t know what it would look like beyond that, but there was certainly a way of tying this into a possible return of Supernatural down the line, which Robbie [Thompson] and I had talked about. It’s something that Jared [Padalecki] and I have talked about, what that might look like.”

Supernatural and the Curse to Expand Its Universe

The CW

The Winchesters isn’t the first Supernatural spinoff to fail in making it through more than one season. In fact, one of the great challenges that the successful series has had throughout its history was finding a way to survive beyond the original story.

The first show to go after that goal was Ghostfacers. Following the appearance of the ghost hunting team in the third season of Supernatural, showrunner Eric Kripke announced that Harry and Ed would have their own story. And they did, but with a single season in the form of a web series on The CW’s YouTube channel. Although after the first installment they had an extra episode, with the appearance of Castiel (Misha Collins), they failed to prosper.

Another spinoff was the Supernatural animated series, although it was a loose adaptation of the original version. It was in charge of the Japanese division of Warner Bros. and it got 22 episodes. In its English version, Padalecki returned to voice Sam, but Ackles was unable to voice Dean, although he did return for the final two episodes and recorded for the DVD.

In 2013 came the third attempt. Supernatural: Bloodlines presented its pilot episode within the series, in the ninth season, introducing five crime families from different supernatural origins who were fighting to take over Chicago. The series would explore that plot, but after being rejected by critics and the fans, The CW did not give it the green light to continue.

Finally, the last opportunity before the arrival of The Winchesters was the Wayward Sisters. This series was to be starred entirely by women, all characters already introduced in Supernatural. Again, the pilot was part of the main show in season 13, but it also failed to pass the filter upon its debut.
