John Boyega Discusses Making Peace With His Star Wars Experience

John Boyega, who joined the Star Wars franchise as Finn in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, has always been open about his experiences in the franchise. The British actor admitted that being a part of the franchise has been a complicated part of his life. Though Star Wars has introduced him to international stardom and paved the way for him to land roles for greater projects, still, the experience is horrible for him.

It might look great to be among the first Black actors to join the widely-known franchise, but Boyega revealed that it came with a lot of agony. The actor has openly talked about the lack of support from Disney after he experienced racism from the franchise’s fans. He was also dissatisfied with the involvement of his character in the film while being marketed as a vital part of the movie.

In his previous interview with IndieWire, the actor shared the difficulty of taking part in the Star Wars film. He said:

“It’s so difficult to maneuver. You get yourself involved in projects, and you’re not necessarily going to like everything. [But] what I would say to Disney is do not bring out a Black character, market them to be much more important in the franchise than they are, and then have them pushed to the side. It’s not good. I’ll say it straight up.”

Now that he’s on his way to the top with a thriving career, the actor no longer feels hostile when talking about his experience with the franchise. In Boyega’s latest interview with The Times, as reported by IndieWire, he details how he made peace with everything that happened. He explained,

“For me ‘Star Wars’ has made the man, in a sense. The experiences, the fun times, good times, ugly times, bad times, it makes you who you are as you navigate through the industry, and that has definitely been interesting.”

He added that JJ Abrams’ conclusion to the trilogy fixed his character’s importance to the story. What Abrams did with The Rise of Skywalker added to his satisfaction with what happened to his character, and the end of the story gave him peace of mind that made him comfortable in watching more Star Wars projects. Talking about his character in the film, he said,

“I feel like the arc that JJ tried to tie up, that’s where I feel comfortable with the release of him. And since then I’ve been able to enjoy, as a fan, ‘The Mandalorian’ and ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi.’ I’m enjoying the balance of all things.”
