Jordan Peele might not be back in the director’s seat just yet following the success of his 2022 hit Nope, but his latest behind-the-scenes effort as a producer has his fingerprints all over it. Titled Him, the psychological sports horror movie is set to hit theaters this September, and if the newly released trailer is any indication of anything, fans are in for a wild ride.
Directed by Justin Tipping (Kicks), the trailer (seen below) for Him showcases star Tyriq Withers as Cameron Cade, an up-and-coming young football sensation who gets the opportunity to train with Marlon Wayans’ character of Isaiah White. Things quickly go off the rails when he realizes that his coach’s methods are unorthodox, to say the least, and from there things get even crazier as the trailer descends into something that resembles a bad acid trip. Honestly, we’d expect nothing less from Peele.
Also starring Julia Fox, Tim Heidecker, Jim Jefferies, Naomi Grossman, and GiGi Erneta, Him was produced by Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions after the studio acquired the script back in 2022. Penned by Zack Akers and Skip Bronkie, it was originally titled Goat before undergoing a name change after it was announced that Tipping was being brought in to direct. As if the trailer wasn’t enough to get you pumped for the new film, its synopsis gives us a little more insight into what we can expect later this year:
“Him stars former college wide-receiver Tyriq Withers as Cameron Cade, a rising-star quarterback who has devoted his life, and identity, to football. On the eve of professional football’s annual scouting Combine, Cam is attacked by an unhinged fan and suffers a potentially career-ending brain trauma.
“Just when all seems lost, Cam receives a lifeline when his hero, Isaiah White (Wayans), a legendary eight-time Championship quarterback and cultural megastar, offers to train Cam at Isaiah’s isolated compound that he shares with his celebrity influencer wife, Elsie White (Julia Fox). But as Cam’s training accelerates, Isaiah’s charisma begins to curdle into something darker, sending his protégé down a disorienting rabbit hole that may cost him more than he ever bargained for.”
Tyriq Withers Is One Of Hollywood’s Fastest Rising Stars
While he may play a rising football star in Him, off the fictional gridiron, Withers is undoubtedly one of Hollywood’s hottest new players. Though he only has a handful of credits to his name, the 27-year-old has made the most of his opportunities after getting his break thanks to the TV series Atlanta, where he played Aaron in the episode “Rich Wigga, Poor Wigga.”
Since then, Withers has appeared in the Hulu hit, Tell Me Lies, and was featured in the 2024 remake of Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead. He’s currently starring in the I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel as Teddy Spencer, one of the members of the core group of friends that are targeted by the hook-wielding Fisherman killer.
Needless to say, we can’t wait to see what he does with his role in Him, which looks to be a phenomenal showcase of his talents. You can check it out for yourself when the new horror movie hits theaters on Sept. 19, 2025 from Universal, and look for Withers to appear next year as the lead in the adaptation of the bestselling Colleen Hoover novel, Reminders of Him.
