LeBron James still isn’t sure if he’ll return for a record-extending 24th NBA campaign next season.
“When I know, you guys will know,” James told reporters Sunday during his media availability. “I don’t know. I have no idea. I just want to live, that’s all.”
James is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. The 41-year-old has spent eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, leading the storied franchise to its most recent title in 2020.
However, the Lakers have won just two playoff series since that championship run.
There’s reportedly been internal tension as well, with team governor and minority owner Jeanie Buss souring on James.
The Cleveland Cavaliers, with whom James has spent 11 years of his career, are apparently open to bringing him back for a third stint if the four-time Finals MVP expresses a desire to return home next season.
Meanwhile, James says he’s focused on the current campaign and getting on the same page as teammates Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves for the stretch run.
Injuries have limited the trio to just 10 games played together this season.
“I know that when we’ve played some of our best basketball of the season, we’ve looked very good,” James said. “On the other side, when we’ve been terrible, we’ve looked disgusting. So, I think the most important (thing) is, if we can get healthy, how many minutes we could be on the floor, how much chemistry we can build with the sprint starting.
“You would hope that you can have the regular season and kind of build that cohesiveness and things of that nature, but I’m hoping that if we can get healthy that we can start to build that.”
