Lockwood & Co. Canceled at Netflix After One Season

One season’s going to be it for the supernatural detective series Lockwood & Co., as the show has been officially canceled. Variety reports that Netflix has pulled the plug on Lockwood & Co. with no plans to develop a second season. The first season, which debuted on the streaming platform in January, will now serve as the only season for the show. Series creator Joe Cornish will continue to work with Netflix under his Complete Fiction with other projects currently in the works.

“With heavy hearts, we announce that Lockwood & Co. will not be returning for a second series,” a Complete Fiction statement reads, going on to praise author Jonathan Stroud, who wroke the original book series the show was based on. “Making this show was one of the most rewarding experiences of our careers and we will forever treasure it. Being trusted by the supremely talented Jonathan Stroud to adapt his outstanding series of books was an honor and a privilege.”

Adding further praise to the show’s lead actors, the statement also notes, “We are particularly proud of the gifted young actors who brought Jonathan’s beloved fictional characters to the screen with such warmth, charm and vulnerability. Ruby, Cameron and Ali were our perfect Lucy, Lockwood and George. We couldn’t have asked for a more dedicated or talented trio. All three are superstars and we can’t wait to see them shine in the dazzling bright future that undoubtedly awaits them.”

“To the fans – to Lock Nation – you really have been the greatest,” the statement goes on say. “We cannot thank you enough for how much you have embraced, celebrated and loved the show. You are the kindest, most creative group of people online and it has been so gratifying to see how your passion for these characters and this world has brought you all together. This might be the end of the line for the TV show, but the books live on, as do the friendships made. We encourage you to embrace both.”

Lockwood & Co. Was Canceled Due to Low Viewership

Netflix

The Variety report states that Netflix execs were “very pleased” with the series itself, and that the show getting axed comes down to its viewership numbers. Critics were also satisfied, as the show debuted with a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes when it arrived. Unfortunately, there just weren’t enough people streaming the show for Netflix to commit to ordering a second season. There is also no word of the series getting shopped elsewhere, as the next steps at Complete Fiction seem to be focusing on their separate Netflix projects. Fans will have to turn to the book series if they want to keep the story going.

This show has become just the latest of many to be axed at Netflix after just one season. Last month, the streamer canceled Freeridge after its first season fell short with viewership numbers. Some other shows at Netflix to be canceled after a single season in recent months include Uncoupled, Inside Job, 1899, Blockbuster, The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself, The Midnight Club, First Kill, Q-Force, and Resident Evil.

Lockwood & Co. follows the three young members of a psychic detection agency as they take on spirits in an alternate version of present-day Britain. In this world, adults cannot sense these ghosts, but children can. You can stream the first and only season of Lockwood & Co on Netflix.
