‘Mandalorian & Grogu’ Creators Tease Popcorn Bucket for ‘Star Wars’ Film

Fans found themselves inundated with plenty of juicy updates and breaking news over the weekend coming out of the 2025 edition of Star Wars Celebration, which was held this year in Tokyo. Creator George Lucas’ galaxy far, far away continues to expand exponentially with content, and one of the high points of the three-day event came when The Mandalorian and Grogu took center stage in Japan. However, while creator Jon Favreau revealed plenty of exciting details, particularly within the new footage shown to those in attendance, the movie’s writer and director admits that his team has yet to address what kind of popcorn bucket(s) will accompany the streaming series’ move to the big screen. Favreau said in an interview with Collider:

“That’s a great question that has not been reached yet […] The subject has not been broached yet. I mean, Star Wars, as you could see from walking the floor, as much as it’s — we grew up at a time when you got to see it in the movie theater. And when it was out of the movie theater, all you had was the album and the toys. And toys were a big part of it. And when we plan new designs, we think about what’s it going to be like as a collectible or as a toy. And also, we think about what was a collectible or a toy that was never really in the movies. And we get a lot of inspiration from that. Now the popcorn bucket has become a thing. So, I don’t know.”

Jon Favreau Explains ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’s Re-Writes and Why They Are Not a Bad Thing

Jon Favreau has no issues with re-writing his ‘Star Wars’ projects, and explains why they are not a bad thing.

“It’s got to be Grogu, right? Sitting there with popcorn in front of him, and the bucket’s the pram,” Dave Filoni insisted, who joined Favreau and Rosario Dawson for the sit-down with Collider. Baby Yoda is clearly a no-brainer where the Star Wars theatrical souvenir is concerned. Certainly, the lovable, Force-sensitive companion of Mando (Pedro Pascal) has won over the hearts of the fandom since Baby Yoda first graced the small screen in Season 1 of the hit Disney+ series, and that affection is also true where one of the newest members of the cast is concerned.

Sigourney Weaver Has Made No Secret About Her Love for Grogu

The news broke that Sigourney Weaver was officially in talks to join The Mandalorian and Grogu back in May 2024, and the three-time Academy Award nominee (Aliens, Working Girl, Gorillas in the Mist) has made no secret about her love for Grogu in interviews since joining that galaxy far, far away. The actress opened up even more about her cute and cuddly costar while attending Star Wars Celebration in Japan. Weaver said in an interview with IGN:

“Grogu is very mischievous. I’m sure that won’t surprise you. It’s funny because, in every scene with Grogu, there were several puppeteers who each helped him do a different thing. However, no matter how many puppeteers were around him, all I saw was Grogu. I still think he’s real.”

Weaver portrays a pilot who fought with the rebellion against the evil Galactic Empire. Now, though, in The Mandalorian and Grogu, she finds herself out among the Outer Rim in need of teammates like Din Djarin, a.k.a. Mando (Pascal), and Grogu. In a hilarious twist during her interview, the actress even addressed whether her pint-sized, Force-sensitive costar is more powerful than a Xenomorph from her Alien franchise. Weaver said:

“Well, it’s not that I don’t believe in him, but I’m afraid it’s a Xenomorph because he can’t help himself. He just has to take over and destroy and promote his group. And, what I know and remember of Yoda is that he is too wise to do all of that. He’s not a destructive being. He’s on the side of good, and I think Grogu is too, obviously.”

The Mandalorian and Grogu hits theaters on May 22, 2026. Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU in Avengers: Doomsday also opens that same month as part of a summer movie season that promises to be one of the biggest and best yet. Blockbuster hopefuls, including Toy Story 5, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, and many more titles all hit theaters that same summer.
