Margot Robbie Talks Barbie Future & if She Will Play Harley Quinn Again

Summary

  • Margot Robbie hopes to see other actresses portray Harley Quinn in the future, similar to the way iconic male characters get passed on.
  • The plans for Harley Quinn in the DC Universe remain unknown as Lady Gaga takes on the role for the anticipated Joker sequel.
  • Robbie expresses uncertainty about a Barbie sequel, as the film wasn’t originally designed to be a trilogy.

James Gunn has responded to comments made by Margot Robbie in relation to her future as Harley Quinn in the new DCU. While Robbie suggested that her popular character is one that can be passed on to other actresses, Gunn jumped on his Threads account to give fans hope that the Suicide Squad star could return as Harley in the future, or at least play some role in the DCU. Gunn said:

I haven’t talked to Margot about Harley for a long time. But I’d love to work with her again as Harley or as someone else. There are no plans at this time for anyone else to play Harley (I mean, other than in Todd’s movie or the animated show/s)

This week, Robbie discussed the future of two of her most recognizable roles: Barbie and Harley Quinn. While one may immediately think of Barbie when the actress is mentioned, given the film’s recent success, her appearances as the one-time girlfriend of DC’s Joker is one that is just as memorable for many fans. In 2016, she was introduced as Harley Quinn in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, reprising the role for 2020’s Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) and 2021’s The Suicide Squad. DC fans have long loved the complex DC villain, and Robbie’s iteration only propelled Harley Quinn’s popularity (and inspired endless Halloween costumes).

During a recent interview with Variety, Robbie opened up about a potential return as Harley Quinn:

“I always wanted Harley to be a character that would get passed on to other actresses to play, the way there are so many iconic male characters. That was always the dream for her. Harley’s so fun and can go in so many different directions. You put her in someone else’s hands, and it’s like, ‘What are they going to do with her?’ The options are endless.”

While multiple actresses have voiced the character for animated films, animated shows (including Kaley Cuoco), and video games, and others have tackled the role for live-action television, Robbie was the first to star as Harley Quinn in a live-action film. Lady Gaga will become the second when she appears in the anticipated Joker sequel Joker: Folie à Deux.

Margot Robbie Says Barbie ‘Wasn’t Designed To Be a Trilogy’

Barbie

Release Date July 21, 2023

Whether a Barbie sequel will transpire has been a hot topic of conversation since the film premiered. Along with starring as Stereotypical Barbie in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, Robbie served as a producer on the film, so it’s only natural that Robbie be asked about the possibility of a follow-up film.

“It’s funny, that knee-jerk reaction in this day and age for everyone to immediately ask about a sequel. I don’t think it was like that 20 years ago. This wasn’t designed to be a trilogy,” she said.

Barbie grossed over a billion dollars at the box office, becoming the highest-grossing Warner Bros. movie in the studio’s history; it’s also the first movie directed solely by a woman to cross the $1 billion mark. The film’s success is far from over, as it’s expected to rack up accolades during awards season. That success, according to Robbie, was in part due to Gerwig putting everything into the film and finishing on “empty”:

“Everything went into ‘Barbie’ — and that’s how Greta works. She finishes every movie on empty, feeling like she could never make another movie because she put everything she had into that one. So I don’t know what it would take to fill that cup up again for her. Or for us. I think Warners would also agree. I don’t know what more could even look like. We want to make more films that have the effect that ‘Barbie’ has. I don’t know if it has to be ‘Barbie 2.’ Why can’t it be another big, original, bold idea where we get an amazing filmmaker, a big budget to play with, and the trust of a huge conglomerate behind them to go and really play? I want to do that.”

Robbie most recently served as a producer for Saltburn and is set to produce numerous upcoming films, including Tank Girl and Olivia Wilde’s Naughty. She is next due to reunite with Barbie co-star Ryan Gosling for an Oceans Eleven prequel.
