McCarthy: Jones wants me to coach Cowboys as long as Landry did

Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy said Thursday that owner Jerry Jones wants him to coach the team as long as Tom Landry did.

“OK, that’s a long time,” McCarthy said, replying to Jones’ comments, according to Jori Epstein of Yahoo Sports.

Landry was the head coach of the Cowboys for 29 years, leading them to two Super Bowl championships. McCarthy has been the head boss for three seasons, posting a 30-20 record, including 1-2 in the playoffs.

McCarthy acknowledged that he is aware of the external talk about his job security, but he believes he and Jones are in an “excellent spot,” according to Epstein.

Offensive coordinator Kellen Moore interviewed for the Carolina Panthers job, but they decided to go with Frank Reich. With Moore not getting the Panthers’ head coaching role, McCarthy needs to make a decision on Moore’s future with the team.

He did not guarantee Moore would be back next season.

“I really don’t want to play this game today,” McCarthy said when asked about Moore’s future, according to Pro Football Talk’s Charean Williams. “It’s been a long couple of days. Kellen Moore, just like the rest of the coaches, will be evaluated. Every coach will be evaluated. The evaluations, it takes more than one day.”

Defensive coordinator Dan Quinn informed teams Thursday that he will return to the Cowboys for the 2023 season. The Arizona Cardinals, Indianapolis Colts, and Denver Broncos all interviewed Quinn for their vacant head coaching jobs.

The staff around McCarthy will look different in 2023 regardless of Moore’s future. Offensive line coach Joe Philbin, running backs coach Skip Pete, and senior defensive assistant George Edwards did not get their contracts renewed.
