Be warned, SPOILERS for Eyes of Wakanda to follow…
As the MCU expands further and further beyond what turned out to be the humble beginnings of Iron Man and The Avengers, the likes of time travel and the multiverse have had major implications on the rest of the franchise. But perhaps none more so than the latest Marvel spin-off, which shines a whole new light on one of the MCU’s best movies.
Debuting on Disney+ at the end of last week, the animated Black Panther spin-off series Eyes of Wakanda has already seen huge success on the streamer and with critics, landing a score of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. Created by Todd Harris, Eyes of Wakanda gives audiences an insight into the history of the titular nation, which is best known for being the home and kingdom of T’Challa, aka Black Panther. The series tells four stories from across Wakandan history, introducing the nation’s brave warriors and the impact they have had on the MCU behind the scenes.
And, as it turns out, the impact is huge. SPOILERS to follow, as the last episode of Eyes of Wakanda finds a Black Panther from the future, notably the last Black Panther who, following a catastrophic alien invasion, travels back in time to ensure that the events of the first Black Panther happen.
The episode centers on an artifact, a vibranium axe, which a young Wakandan prince and his advisor have set out to find and bring back to Wakanda. This axe is the same one that Michael B. Jordan’s Erik “Killmonger” Stevens steals from a British museum at the beginning of Black Panther, which leads to his return to Wakanda and taking the throne before T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) takes it back and reveals the formerly secret Wakandan nation to the world.
‘Eyes of Wakanda’ Finds the Last Black Panther on a World-Saving Mission Through Time

You see, in this last Black Panther’s timeline, this never happened as the axe was never lost. And thus, Wakanda never revealed itself. This meant that, when the alien invasion happened, Wakanda did not offer aid or help. So, Eyes of Wakanda essentially reveals that Black Panther and everything that followed only happened because of time travel.
Marvel fans have since taken to social media to share their reactions to this revelation, with one teasing “you would not f*cking believe what happens in the last episode.” Another fan adds, “Eyes of Wakanda was amazing. Never saw the ending coming but damn they pulled out that mid 2000’s lore.”
While it comes as a shock, it seems that the majority are on board with such a wild decision, with another fan saying, “Oh my gosh….the ending of #EyesOfWakanda gave me chills! It’s so good, give it a watch (ITS CANON)” And praise has been heaped on the series as a whole, with another fan adding, “The only think I hate about it is how short it was like?? Only FOUR episodes?? GIVE ME MOREEEE”
Eyes of Wakanda creator Todd Harris has since offered some insight into this timey wimey ending, saying, “You’ve got to make a show mean something.” He continued while speaking with EW…
“All comic book fans love feeling like they’re on the inside, like, ‘That’s the thing! I know about this!’ So you get that instant buzz. But then also, too, that thing is the string that goes through [the show]. ‘Wakanda forever’ is not just a motto, it’s that all these people have the same mentality no matter what point in history they are in. That dedication to that continuity is the most important part of this show. It’s there to secure a future that none of those people will be around to see happen. That’s the beauty of the show.”
