A Star Wars Story Writers Couldn’t Use Boba Fett in Prequel Movie

Jonathan Kasdan has spoken about wanting to use Boba Fett in Solo, but he was told the character was “off limits.”

There were many factors about Solo: A Star Wars Story that failed to connect with audiences and critics, but would an appearance by Boba Fett have helped the highly criticized Star Wars prequel movie? It seems that could have been a possibility if the writers had been allowed to use the character, but according to Jonathan Kasdan, co-writer of the 2018 movie, the character was “off limits” to them. While we are about to see Boba Fett get his own spin-off series in The Book of Boba Fett which makes it’s Disney+ debut this week, it is clear that the fan-favorite could have made a return to the franchise much earlier.

Solo: A Star Wars Story came hot on the heels the popular Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and was meant to be the second in a long series of new Star Wars movies that would also have included the rumored Ewan McGregor Obi-Wan Kenobi movie, which has since evolved into the Disney+ series arriving next year. While Solo became a commercial and critical mess, the film has its fans and has gone on to have a cult following who consider it one of the more underrated movies in the Star Wars canon.

Taking audiences back to the earlier years of Han Solo, before he acquired the Millennium Falcon and became best buddy to a certain Wookie, the film introduced a young and idealistic Solo before he was turned into the cranky character seen in the original Star Wars trilogy. One thing that is notably missing from the movie’s callback references, is any mention of Solo’s link to bounty hunter Boba Fett and the rivalry between the two. Additionally, it was apparent that there were very few mentions to any named bounty hunters of the Star Wars canon despite their inclusion being one that would have certainly fleshed out the story a little more and perhaps taken the edge off some of the more disappointing aspects that became more of a talking point of the film in general.

Now in an interview with the New York Times, Kasdan has perhaps given some insight into why those avenues weren’t fully explored. Despite wanting to bring Fett into the story, Kasdan said:

“Boba was always off limits because he was in development elsewhere.”

It is now apparent that the development mentioned was for The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, with The Mandalorian’s first season debuting in 2019 on Disney+ when it teased Fett in the fifth episode of the premiere season. When Fett made his full debut in Season 2, there was clearly a big plan for the character that had been in place for a long while. In The Book of Boba Fett, fans will get to see a lot of pieces of Fett’s backstory come into play, such as how he survived his apparent death in Return of The Jedi, and how he attempts to take over the criminal underworld after the demise of Jabba the Hutt. In the end, if there had been a straight choice between Fett becoming part of Solo: A Star Wars Story or getting his own spin-off series, then it has probably turned out for the best.

The Book of Boba Fett makes its debut on Disney+ on December 29th.
