Attack the Block 2 Picks Up with Moses in His 30s & Deals With Gentrification, John Boyega Reveals

Actor John Boyega has offered further insight into his and director Joe Cornish’s planned sequel to their 2011 hit, Attack the Block. Speaking with Deadline, Boyega revealed that Attack the Block 2 would deal with gentrification, taking audiences back to locations from the first movie and showing how much they’ve changed in the last 11 years.

“We go back and look at the locations where we shot the first movie [Southwark and Walworth in south London]—once dodgy areas—and we find that it’s all gleaming, high-end apartments and Starbucks. There’s a whole world that we’re about to explore here with a whole new take on that universe, building and revisiting those characters.”

Alongside these details, Boyega revealed that Attack the Block 2 would pick up with his character, Moses, all these years later. Now in his 30s, Moses is still living in London, but things have “changed between the first movie and now.”

The streets of South London played an integral part in the first Attack the Block, so it’s good to hear that they will do the same in the sequel. Even if things are different now. What is still a mystery is whether things will be different for Moses. Or has London changed while he’s stayed the same? Where do you go after saving the world from an alien invasion at just 15 years old?

John Boyega Will Write Attack the Block 2 Alongside Joe Cornish

Released in 2011, the first Attack the Block centers on a teenage street gang led by John Boyega as Moses. When predatory alien invaders land on their council estate in South London, the gang is forced to defend their turf against these savage alien creatures. Together, they must step up and fight to succeed in their mission and stop the creatures from wiping out humanity.

Written and directed by Joe Cornish, and starring Doctor Who’s Jodie Whittaker, as well as Alex Esmail, Franz Drameh, Leeon Jones, Simon Howard, and Nick Frost alongside John Boyega, Attack the Block underperformed at the box office upon release, but was highly praised by critics. The movie has since garnered a dedicated following thanks to its perfect mix of sci-fi, comedy, and horror.

Both John Boyega and Joe Cornish have wanted to see Attack the Block 2 realized for some time, with the pair offering an assortment of updates over the last few years. “This process has been fantastic. The story has actually been presented by myself and Joe Cornish. We’ve collaborated heavily on making a story that makes sense for Moses and the other characters, and the new characters that will be coming up in the sequel too,” Boyega said back in August. “And then, also, there’s different perspectives in writing it, with Joe having his perspective and me having mine. London has changed so much, in so many different ways, over the years since the first movie. We’re just tryin’ to make sure we explore all of that, while bringing in a whole different vibe to that crazy ass first movie that we made.”

John Boyega is returning to the world of sci-fi comedy with They Cloned Tyrone, which is scheduled to be released on December 30, 2022, by Netflix.
