Zach Cregger is riding a wave of praise for Barbarian, but his passion project would be set in the DC Universe and he already has a script ready to go
Warner Bros. Pictures
Warner Bros. Discovery’s DC plans are very much up in the air at the moment, and that could mean that we see some unexpected movies and shows coming to the big screen. Barbarian director Zach Cregger would really love one of those to be his own Batman spin-off movie, which he says he has already written the script for.
Cregger is currently celebrating a wave of praise for Barbarian, a new horror movie starring Bill Skarsgard, Justin Long, Georgina Campbell and Cregger himself that topped the box office and made back its minuscule $10 million budget on its opening weekend. With critics and fans loving the surprise horror movie, it is no wonder that Cregger is hoping this leads to bigger things, and there wouldn’t be anything bigger than a Batman-related movie. While discussing his current movie with Bloody Disgusting’s The Boo Crew Podcast, Creggers explained his obsession for his proposed Batman project, saying:
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
“The thing I’d love to do next… I’ve actually wrote a movie that takes place in the DC Universe. Which is so not normally my thing; I’m not a superhero guy […] I just couldn’t stop thinking about this one story that kind of takes place in a Batman-adjacent thing. And so I wrote it, and I’m, like, utterly obsessed with it. One day — it’s not going to happen in the next two years — but one day I want to make that.”
For now, Cregger is looking to his next horror movie, something that he calls “more ambitious” than Barbarian. Having spent most of his career so far working in comedy, Cregger’s career could be about to take an unexpected turn as he heads down a darker path that could end up leading to good things.

A Complete Change For Batman Projects Can Be A Good Thing.
Warner Bros.
While Cregger is under no illusions that his Batman-adjacent project is about to suddenly be made overnight, but this year’s release of The Batman proved that sometimes abandoning the tried and tested tech-savvy, flashy kind of Batman that audiences have become used to could be a good thing. While Cregger didn’t go into details about his project, pitching it to Warner Bros. at a time when things are all over the place with their DC output could be the best way of getting such an audacious project.
There are currently a number of “traditional” Batman projects coming set for release in the next year, including appearances by Ben Affleck’s Caped Crusader in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, and both Affleck and Michael Keaton in the batsuit for The Flash. This is of course alongside Matt Reeves universe built around The Batman, which will already include a sequel movie as well as spin-off HBO Max shows centering on The Penguin and Arkham Asylum. Whether that leaves any room for a third branch of Batman is something only Warner Bros. Discovery can really make a call on, but it looks like Cregger is more than ready to offer and option should they wish to pursue it.
Cregger’s Barbarian is in U.S. theaters now and has just been given an October 28 release in the U.K.
