Our first look at Ryan Gosling in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie has been released. Sporting a bleached-blonde hairstyle and surrounded by pink, Gosling sure does look a lot like Ken in the images, seemingly making him a perfect match for Margot Robbie’s Barbie. It’s the second official photo to be released from the film after a prior first look revealed Robbie as the live-action version of the titular Mattel doll.
And Gosling has been giving his all to the role. In a recent interview with ET, co-star Simu Liu was asked getting in shape to play his character in the film. Liu noted while he worked out and dieted for the film, he couldn’t compete with Gosling, who went the extra mile with getting his body to look like how he’d expect a live-action Ken to be.

“Definitely Ryan — 100 percent,” Liu said. “He’s definitely, like, a gym in the morning, gym after work kinda guy. … As much as I believe that I do have a work ethic, I also love food a lot. Just hearing little bits and pieces about, you know, just his strict diet regimen and just like how much emphasis he puts on taking care of himself and his body, I’m like, I respect it, I respect it. I’m gonna have some soda.”

Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling May Not Be the Only Barbie and Ken

Not only is Ryan Gosling playing Ken, but Simu Liu is playing another version of Ken in the film. It was previously reported that the movie will feature multiple versions of Ken and Barbie in addition to Gosling and Margot Robbie in the lead roles. Along with Liu, Ncuti Gatwa, who was just recently named as the next Doctor in Doctor Who, will be playing a Ken. Joining Robbie as Barbies are Issa Rae and Hari Nef.
It’s unclear how many Kens and Barbies total will be in the movie, but Baribe also stars Kate McKinnon, America Ferrera, Ariana Greenblatt, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Michael Cera, and Will Ferrell. Other confirmed cast members include Kingsley Ben-Adir, Rhea Perlman, Emerald Fennell, Sharon Rooney, Scott Evans, Ana Cruz Kayne, Connor Swindells, Ritu Arya, and Jamie Demetriou.
Greta Gerwig directs using a screenplay co-written with Noah Baumbach. Robbie has teased that Gerwig has something unexpected in mind for Barbie but will still be making a movie that can “truly honor” the IP.
“We like the things that feel a little left of center,” Robbie told THR. “Something like Barbie where the IP, the name itself, people immediately have an idea of, ‘Oh, Margot is playing Barbie, I know what that is,’ but our goal is to be like, ‘Whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something totally different — the thing you didn’t know you wanted.’ Now, can we truly honor the IP and the fan base and also surprise people? Because if we can do all that and provoke a thoughtful conversation, then we’re really firing on all cylinders.”
Barbie will be released in movie theaters on July 21, 2023. You can see the full-size image of Ryan Gosling as Ken below.
