Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe Trailer Brings the Boys Back on Paramount+

They’re back from the past and in more ways than one. On Thursday, Paramount+ unleashed the trailer for Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe. The trailer and synopsis can be viewed below.

In perhaps the dumbest space movie ever made, Beavis and Butt-head are sentenced to Space Camp by a “creative” judge in 1998, leading to a trip on the Space Shuttle, with predictably disastrous results. After going through a black hole, they reemerge in our time, where they look for love, misuse iPhones, and are hunted by the Deep State. Spoiler: They don’t score.

Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe is the long-awaited sequel to the duo’s first theatrical adventure, 1996’s Beavis and Butt-Head Do America. Series creator Mike Judge is back as director, writer, and will be reprising his role of voicing the two boys. The film is being produced by MTV Entertainment Studios and Titmouse, Inc.

If you’re new to Beavis and Butt-Head, welcome to the ’90s. Beavis and Butt-Head made their debut in Judge’s 1992 short film Frog Baseball, which was aired on MTV’s Liquid Television. MTV would order an original series starting the boys, which was a smash hit! The show centered around the boys as they went to school, getting part-time jobs, and engaging in dumb teenage shenanigans. Each episode involved a segment of the boys watching popular music videos of the time and providing low-brow commentary.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

As one of MTV’s highest-rated shows at the time, Beavis and Butt-Head would continue to wreak havoc on MTV from 1992 all the way through 1997 with seven seasons. The popularity of the show naturally lead to 1996’s Beavis and Butt-Head Do America. The movie followed the boys on a road trip journey to find their stolen television, and later on “score,” all while being chased by the FBI! The film was a commercial success, with a budget of $12 million and earning $63 million at the box office. In 2011, the duo were back in an official eighth season which consisted of 22 episodes. The series also featured the first appearance of Daria, who would go on to star in her own hit show also on MTV.

It wasn’t until 2014 that Judge spoke about the possibility of reviving the duo once again, but MTV was not interested. In 2020, Comedy Central announced that it ordered a second revival of the show, which would target the Gen Z demographic. The revival would also include multiple spinoffs and movies. But until now, that was the last anybody had heard of the project.

Now, the two had found their way (somewhat) back to MTV as part of the Paramount+ library, which also contains the 200+ episodes of the original series. While on the surface, it may seem like a cartoon with zero substance, Beavis and Butt-Head continues to stand as a living time capsule of 1990s slacker culture. Where the youth couldn’t be bothered to care and preferred to sit back and let the world go by. While Daria’s upcoming spinoff, Jodie, promises a more grounded catch up to the modern world from an older Millenial’s perspective, Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe is more of a celebration of that nostalgic world.

Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe is coming to Paramount+ in June 23rd of this year!
