After finding greater fame and popularity with their acclaimed performance as Ellie in The Last of Us, Bella Ramsey has secured their next big role. Per Deadline, Ramsey is set to star in the upcoming period drama movie Monstrous Beauty. The role will be set during the reign of King Charles II in the 1600s with Ramsey playing an aspiring playwright who suffers from a rare condition making her entire body covered in hair. It’s the first casting to be announced for Ramsey after the Game of Thrones alum’s first season of The Last of Us wrapped up on HBO.
Ramola Garai (Atonement) wrote the script and will direct Monstrous Beauty, which will combine history with fiction with its inclusion of real-life historical figures. The cast also includes Dominic West (The Crown) as King Charles II, Ruth Negga (Passing) as Nell Gwyn, and Finoa Shaw (Killing Eve) as Aphra Ben. Mattehw James Wilkinson (Yesterday) is producing for Stigma Films.

An official synopsis for the movie has been provided as well, and it goes as follows:
“Fueled by the desire to be defined for who she is rather than how she looks, Barbara (Ramsey) aspires to become a playwright under the auspices of famous actress Nell Gwyn (Negga), powerful mistress to the King. Nell herself is intent on teaching Charles a public lesson on the true appreciation of women beyond their physical appearance. Barbara seeks the help of famous playwright of the day, Aphra Behn (Shaw), and casts beautiful actor Vale (the object of Barbara’s own desire) as the lead, despite his lack of talent. But will Barbara succeed in becoming a woman of independent means whilst challenging a highly patriarchal society, and become master of her own destiny?”

“I am beyond thrilled to be bringing this script, that I love so much and that has lived within me for so many years, to the screen,” Garai said in a statement. “Barbara’s deep need to express herself and to be seen and appreciated by others… is all of ours; I am over the moon and truly humbled to be making this film with such an incredible roster of talent – they have responded with such intelligence, sensitivity and love to Barbara and her story. ”
Ramsey broke out on the scene in show business with their popular role as Lyanna Mormont in multiple seasons of Game of Thrones; her Last of Us co-star, Pedro Pascal, had also appeared in the series, though they never shared any screen time. Ramsey also voices the titular character in the animated series Hilda and stars as Jane Grey in the historical drama series Becoming Elizabeth. The actor also does voiceover work for the upcoming animated sequel Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, and last year, they led the cast of the Prime Video movie Catherine Called Birdy.
Monstrous Beauty doesn’t yet have a release date.
