Bob Odenkirk Has ‘Mixed Feelings’ About Better Call Saul Ending

There has been some time for reflection for Bob Odenkirk after the series finale of Better Call Saul, as the show’s conclusion marks the end of an era for the actor’s life and career. Since 2009, when he joined Breaking Bad in the show’s second season, Odenkirk has been playing the role of criminal lawyer Saul Goodman, aka Jimmy McGill. He further explored the character with Better Call Saul with the show’s ending providing a bleak yet hopeful fate for Jimmy, who reclaimed his humanity at the cost of his freedom.

Via Deadline, Odenkirk was recently present for a Venice Film Festival masterclass and addressed how things are going for him post-Better Call Saul. He teased that he wants to do more action, as he has been staying in the gym after Nobody just in case more action movie roles were to come along. There have been rumors of Nobody 2 happening so Odenkirk may get his wish.

In any case, whatever comes next, it won’t be Saul Goodman. Odenkirk detailed how it felt to put an end to his run as Saul, who was remarkable to portray as the character had so many layers to him. He’s happy that the series ended without sticking around too long but will miss spending time with his Better Call Saul family. Odenkirk is also just fine with knowing that he’ll forever be synonymous with Saul Goodman.

“I have very mixed feelings. We get into this business most of us because we want to play a variety of stories. It’s one of the joys. It was a long time to play one guy and portray his psyche. He did have a very vast array of emotions and experience so there was great variety. We tested the boundaries with elements that were very comedic, almost like sketch comedy. Breaking Bad didn’t overstay its welcome, and we had a fount of goodwill. I’m gonna miss the good parts of that guy and the friendships with the actors. We even lived together. And that’ll be the role I’ll be known for my whole life. And I’m proud of that.”

There are no plans to continue on with the Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul universe at this time. However, it’s worth noting that Aaron Paul returned to star in the Jesse Pinkman-led Breaking Bad movie El Camino in 2019, several years after the show ended in 2013. Perhaps in due time, there can similarly be a new film for Better Call Saul that provides an update on Jimmy in prison and Kim Wexler (Rhea Seehorn) on the outside.

“I can’t say goodbye,” Odenkirk previously told Extra about potentially returning for a movie. “Oh yeah, [I’d return for a movie]. I love playing this guy. It’s a great joy. There’s never been a part that’s [as] well-written [as this], so I would love to do it again. Look, there are going to be new horizons and new characters to play, but this will be the apex of my acting career. It’s okay. I’m lucky to get this.”
