Brian Cox Backtracks on ‘Overrated’ Johnny Depp Comments

Succession star Brian Cox made comments about Depp being “overblown” in his new memoir, but now seems to have had a change of heart.

It is sometimes hard to admit you are wrong, but actor Brian Cox has been doing just that after his comments about Johnny Depp being “overrated” came out of his recently published memoir, Putting The Rabbit In The Hat. The Succession star has never been afraid of airing his opinions, and it seems that in writing his memoir, Cox was in scathing form when it came to his opinion on the former Fantastic Beasts star. However, it looks like the actor has had a change of heart and recently revealed that he will be adding a correction to the UK release of his book to amend his “glib” joke.

In his book, Cox opened shares his thoughts and opinions on a number of other celebrities and soon after the book’s release, his comments about Johnny Depp gained particular attention. As well as explaining how he turned down the role of Governor Swan in the Pirates of The Caribbean movies, Cox seemed to throw shade at Depp, saying “Personable though I’m sure he is, he is so overblown, so overrated.” He also said that as far as he was concerned the whole Disney franchise became nothing more than “the Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow show”. It seems though that Cox has since had time to contemplate his words, and in an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live went so far as to say he is even changing his book.

“I’ve written an addendum to this book, it’s going to be published in paperback in the UK. I just thought I was being a bit harsh. You know what it’s like, you go for the easy joke. And I went for the easy joke. That was what happened, and I sort of regretted it. Because I’m not like that normally; I was just being a bit glib, a bit flip.”

Brian Cox Has Not Spoken to Depp, But Did Hint That Depp’s “CIA Agency” Fans Have Voiced Their Opinion

During the interview with Kimmel, Cox suggested that he may have been harsh in talking about Depp in such a way in the memoir, and is clearly wanting to set the record straight with an additional piece in the next edition of the book’s publication. As expected, there were plenty of Depp fans who were not happy about the comments and rushed to defend the beleaguered star who is currently wrapped up in a legal battle with Amber Heard. Cox said during the interview that he believes Depp’s fans to be “a CIA agency that works on his behalf” when talking about the backlash he has received in light of the comments.

Cox did not explain exactly what the new text will say in the upcoming UK edition but seemed to say enough to suggest that he will be making it clear that what he originally said about Depp was not said out of disrespect for the actor. In the end, whether the curiosity about his new comments will be enough to draw in a few more prospective buyers when the book is released, it is all publicity for the memoir and Cox will surely be happy to take all the additional promotion he can get.
