Charlie Cox Says Daredevil Return Has Been ‘Really Weird’

Charlie Cox is playing Matt Murdock again after the character’s return in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the experience has admittedly been rather strange for the actor. Previously, Cox starred as Matt Murdock in three seasons of Marvel’s Daredevil on Netflix. The character has since returned in the film Spider-Man: No Way Home and the Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. After Vincent D’Onofrio also reprised his role from Daredevil as Wilson Fisk in Hawkeye, it was announced that he would be joining Cox in their own Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again.

Per ComicBook.com, Cox and D’Onofrio were present at ICCCon in Nashville, Tennessee. Speaking at a panel, Cox addressed the “weird” feeling that comes with returning to that role. He goes on to tease how this version of Matt Murdock might be a “variant’ from the one in the Netflix series, but either way, he’s gone through a lot and would be much more experienced than when he was starring in Daredevil.

As Cox explains, “It was really weird. And I’m older and so therefore he’s older. So I think it was important … for that to be a part of it. I don’t know necessarily what I mean by that, but he’s been through more. He’s been through everything in some way. In some world, in some variant, he’s been through what we’ve seen or not.”

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law Return Was Fun for Charlie Cox

Marvel Studios

Cox also touched on returning on She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, which was more of a comedy compared to other Marvel shows. For his part, Cox rather enjoyed coming into the She-Hulk series, given the contrast that there was. He’d been used to portraying Daredevil in the dark, gritty world of the Netflix show, and even as the same character, he was able to do something much more fun with his guest appearance with Tatiana Maslany in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.

“But She-Hulk was really fun because one of the things we didn’t do a huge amount of in the original show — it was so dark so much of the time, he was so tortured that in the comics there was at times a lot of levity,” Cox explained. “There was a lot of fun and he’s very charismatic and he’s very funny at times. We didn’t do too much of that. We didn’t have much of that.”

The plan for Daredevil: Born Again was to film throughout the year for a release on Disney+ in 2024. However, the production has shut down because of the ongoing writers strike, and it’s unclear when filming will resume. For now, there’s no set release date for Daredevil: Born Again, though we know the show will be much longer than most of the Marvel shows on Disney+, as it was ordered for 18 episodes. Whatever the plan is for Cox’s Matt Murdock in the MCU, the powers that be at Marvel Studios clearly have high hopes.
