Chris Evans Isn’t Closing the Door on Potential Return as Captain America

It’s been three years since Avengers: Endgame, the epic sendoff to some of Earth’s mightiest heroes, concluded the 22-film Infinity Saga. Chris Evans, who played Steve Rodgers, or Captain America, was a central part of the storyline within the MCU. He initially appeared in Captain America: The First Avenger in 2011 before completing two other Cap movies and four Avengers films. Now Evans is preparing for the release of another iconic role, Buzz Lightyear in Pixar’s Lightyear. The movie tells the story of the real-life astronaut that the action figure from Toy Story is based on, coming to theaters on June 17th.

During a press tour for Evans’ upcoming film, he spoke with Comic Book regarding the possibility of a return to the MCU. Following the release of Endgame, fans speculated whether we would see Steve Rogers in another film focused on the hero returning the Infinity Stones, which occurred off-screen in the last Avengers movie. Evans was keen on the idea, although he’s unsure if he would actually go through with it.

“That seems to be something people would like to see. I don’t want to disappoint anybody, but it’s tough to… It was such a good run and I’m so happy with it. It’s so precious to me. It would have to be perfect. It would just be scary to rattle something that is, again, so dear to me. That role means so much to me. So, to revisit it, it would be a tall order.”

Although he’s not entirely ruling out a return as Captain America, it seems the script would need to be nearly flawless to get the star back. In January 2021, Deadline revealed that Evans is expected to return as Captain America in an unknown project, separate from the Anthony Mackie-led Captain America 4. Since then, we haven’t heard any news. Whether the project was scrapped or never existed to begin with is still unknown.

What Else Has Chris Evans Been Working On?

Netflix

Following his exit from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Evans appeared in the AppleTV+ series Defending Jacob. The show is based on the New York Times best-selling novel of the same name, centered around an assistant DA whose world is shattered when his beloved son gets charged with murder. The series starred Cherry Jones, Michelle Dockery, and Jaeden Martell alongside Evans. He then appeared in a cameo for the 2021 film, Don’t Look Up, as Devin Peters, the Hollywood actor who doesn’t involve himself in politics.

Now, Evans is turning away from the archetypal hero to a psychotic villain in Netflix’s The Gray Man. He plays Lloyd Hansen, a former colleague of Ryan Gosling’s character who puts a bounty on his head after the CIA operative discovers dark agency secrets. The film includes Ana De Armas and Billy Bob Thornton, with the Russo Brothers set to direct. The pair of directors worked with Evans on two Captain America films and two Avengers as well. The Gray Man is set to release on Netflix on July 22nd.
