Stephen Amell and cousin Robbie Amell have another hit on their hands. Their sci-fi sequel, Code 8: Part II, has been at the very top of the Netflix charts since it was released on Feb. 28, even bringing the original Code 8 into the top 10 with it. That’s an impressive feat for a franchise which began as a crowdfunded short film. We spoke with the Amells, and they were unflappable when asked about making Code 8 a trilogy with a third film.
“At the end of the day, we were able to make Part One because fans turned out for the Indiegogo campaign, and we were able to make Part Two because the fans turned out for Part One and watched it on Netflix,” said Robbie Amell. “So all it comes down to at the end of the day is if people watch Part Two. If you watch it, and we get the numbers, we get to make another one.” He added:
We would love to. We love making it, you know, it’s very much a passion product and a dream project for all those involved. It’s been a lot of the same crew from the short film in Part One and Part two, and we take a lot of pride in it and a lot of ownership over it. So we’d love to keep going.
Seeing as Code 8: Part II has been such a phenomenal success, a third film is now basically guaranteed. Whether it will take four or five years like this sequel is unknown, but watch this space for more information.

Code 8 takes place in Lincoln City, in a future where a small percentage of the population have superhuman powers. “In our world, these people with abilities are marginalized and feared. We always wanted to make it feel like, what would people do if people really had powers?” Robbie Amell mused, adding:
Our film kind of lives in a gray area — not really right or wrong or black or white. Life is all about perspective, and it changes as you learn different things, so I feel like the characters are going through the same thing.
It’s Stephen Amell’s character, Connor, who perhaps best represents this in the sequel. An antagonist with a moral compass who ends up working with Garrett. “I don’t really have to do much more than what’s what’s on the page,” explained Stephen Amell, highlighting the script written by Chris Paré and Jeff Chan with Sherren Lee and Jesse LaVercombe. “I don’t try to like, you know, twist my mustache.” And that’s the interesting thing about the film — it doesn’t broadcast what is good or bad and spoon-feed audiences those ethics.
