Disney’s Dynamic Duo are More Hilarious Than Ever

Directed by Lonely Island’s Akiva Schaffer, Chip and Dale are back in an all-new action-adventure comedy. Chip n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers is an upcoming film based on the titular characters and the subsequent animated television series of the same name. The film is a complete hybrid of live-action and CG animation that takes place thirty years after the original Rescue Rangers series ended production. Throughout the entire film, viewers will easily notice tons of cameos, throwbacks, and references that simply create their own cartoon multiverse.

The official synopsis for Chip n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers reads: “A comeback 30 years in the making, Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers catches up with the former Disney Afternoon television stars in modern-day Los Angeles. In this hybrid live-action/CG animated action-comedy, Chip and Dale are living amongst cartoons and humans in modern-day Los Angeles, but their lives are quite different now. It has been decades since their successful television series was canceled, and Chip (voice of John Mulaney) has succumbed to a life of suburban domesticity as an insurance salesman. Dale (voice of Andy Samberg), meanwhile, has had CGI surgery and works the nostalgia convention circuit, desperate to relive his glory days. When a former castmate mysteriously disappears, Chip and Dale must repair their broken friendship and take on their Rescue Rangers detective personas once again to save their friend.”

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

The film stars Mulaney (Saturday Night Live) as Chip, Samberg (Palm Springs) as Dale and KiKi Layne (If Beale Street Could Talk), Will Arnett (Arrested Development), Eric Bana (Dirty John), Flula Borg (Pitch Perfect 2), Dennis Haysbert (24), Keegan-Michael Key (Schmigadoon!), Tress MacNeille (The Simpsons), Tim Robinson (I Think You Should Leave), Seth Rogen (Pam and Tommy), J.K. Simmons (Being the Ricardos). The film is directed by Akiva Schaffer (Saturday Night Live), written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend), and is produced by Todd Lieberman (Wonder) and David Hoberman (Beauty and the Beast), with Alexander Young (Extinction) and Tom Peitzman serving as executive producers. Chip n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers has a total confirmed runtime of 97 minutes.

Why You Should Watch Chip n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers

Chip n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers is a sharp-witted blast from the past. The upcoming film is just stacked with so many easter eggs, cameos, and references. Some viewers may also agree that the upcoming hybrid live-action/CG animated film even contains way more cameos and surprises than any Marvel film. Overall, the film was delightfully hilarious and was easily made for both adults and kids to enjoy alike. Chip n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers is an easy successor to Who Framed Roger Rabbit, while the film slips in a few Lonely Island humor in a family-friendly way, of course.

While Chip n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers isn’t obviously the first film to combine both live-action and animation on the same screen, it certainly proves to be one of the best contenders to date. Lead stars Mulaney and Samberg were definitely the right choices to take on the roles of both Chip and Dale. Both voice actors did a phenomenal job carrying the legacy of these two Disney classic characters, while the rest of the cast made the film even more enjoyable. For fans that truly loved watching the original Rescue Rangers animated series between 1989-1990, Chip n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers is certainly a must-see film as it serves as somewhat of a continuation since the animated show ended.

Combining Multiple Animation Styles Along with Live-Action

Walt Disney Studios

During a recent interview with Total Film, director Akiva Schaffer was asked why he decided to go above and beyond by combining several animation styles, while also featuring the film in live-action. “That was part of what attracted me to it. The writers, Doug Mann and Dan Gregor, had already cracked that part of it. It was already planned that Chip was going to be 2D and Dale was going to be 3D throughout the whole movie and that it was kind of the Roger Rabbit world of toons living among us where some are movie stars and some are just, like, the cow teacher at their school. That was already all in there. And that was a big part of what made me sign up to do it. It was kind of the limitless possibilities of that idea.”

Chip n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers also serves Schaffer’s first-ever animated film. “Yes, yes. That was also part of it: I wanted to learn not just how animated movies are made, but how the kind of modern ones – like Doctor Strange – are half-animated movies with animated characters and CG environments. All the modern tools of filmmaking for those kinds of movies are all the same tools we used for this. So, I was excited to learn all that stuff.”
