It’s no secret that 2025 is a big year. With some highly anticipated Marvel movies, the return of one of the most iconic rom-com movie series, Bridget Jones, or even controversial projects such as Disney’s Snow White, this year is nothing short of a cinematic rollercoaster. The excitement for something new is here, but who doesn’t sometimes just long for a childhood classic? Even better, a childhood classic with a modern take?
The Answer Studio, which is known for beloved anime productions such as Suzume and Your Name, is delivering just that. The announcement by the Japanese production company that dear Anne will return to the screens in the TV anime Anne Shirley has already brought back the spark. It would be very Anne-coded to leave any information regarding the surrounding news up to the imagination, but instead, let’s take a look at everything we know about the Anne of Green Gables anime remake.
‘Anne of Green Gables’ Is a Timeless Classic
Thanks to the Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery, people all around the world have been able to enjoy various adaptations of Anne Shirley Cuthbert over many decades. Back in 1908, Montgomery’s first novel of her Anne of Green Gables series was published, and the world was blessed with Anne as well as her family and friends (and also foes). Between the year of the first book’s release and 1920, Montogomery published eight Anne of Green Gables books in total.
Throughout the years, Montgomery’s story has been used as a foundation for numerous movies, TV series, stage plays, and even radio dramas. One of the most famous adaptations is the 1985 miniseries Anne of Green Gables, which easily finds a place in everyone’s heart, but even more recently, a more modern take on Anne’s story has brought together an entire fanbase. The 2017 period drama series, Anne With an E, took an exciting approach to exploring Anne’s imagination and creativity in an even deeper way, and, considering that years after the show’s cancelation, the fandom is still petitioning to bring Anne With an E back, the love for the Netflix comfort series is undeniable.
Anne of Green Gables has not only been extremely famous in English-speaking countries though, but it has also been very well received in other parts of the world. In particular, Japan has a significant Anne-fanbase, since many adaptations were translated. Additionally, Nippon Animations produced an anime in 1979, Anne of Green Gables or Akage no An, which was created by Studio Ghibli legends Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, and 2009 saw the release of a second Japanese series by the same studio.

What Can We Expect From the ‘Anne Shirley’ Anime?
The Answer Studio
Despite the visually pleasing anime by Nippon Animations, The Answer Studio and director Hiroshi Kawamata are producing a new, third Japanese anime series, Anne Shirley, for which Kenichi Tsuchiya will be in charge of character design. Just like the previous adaptations of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s classic story, the Anne Shirley anime will obviously also center on the spirited life of Anne, following her along as she explores her new home and uses her imagination.
Anne Shirley will focus on keeping the original elements of the children’s book series by Montgomery alive, while still implementing a more refreshing and modern approach to the various themes in the story. With Anne growing up as an orphan, living with new people, tackling school, love, and friendships, and learning about herself and society, there is a massive playground to look at new perspectives.
Honoka Inoue, who is known for Edens Zero, will take on the voice role of our kindred spirit, Anne Shirley, and will be joined by Naoya Miyase, who is lending his voice to the charming Gilbert Blythe. The two middle-aged siblings, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, will be voiced by Yasunori Matsumoto and Aya Nakamura, respectively, while Anne’s best friend, Diana Barry, will be voiced by Yume Miyamaoto.
