Father of the Bride Director Commemorates 30th Anniversary of Steve Martin Film

Steven Martin’s comedy remake Father of The Bride celebrated its 30th anniversary on Thursday, and director Nancy Meyers remembered her time working on the movie with Martin and co-star Diane Keaton, as well as posting a throwback image from the movie featuring the two leading stars. Meyers shared the image and her comments on Instagram, as she revealed that she had just been reminded of the film’s milestone anniversary, which star Keaton was happy to follow up on with her own comment.

“Someone just told me FATHER OF THE BRIDE came out 30 years ago this week. I loved making that one. Never laughed harder than on that set. @charlesshyerofficial @diane_keaton @kimberlywilliamspaisley @georgenewbern,” Meyers wrote, with Diane Keaton replying, “WOW” in response.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Father of the Bride is one of those remakes that did deserve to be made, based on the Spencer Tracy movie of 1950, and playing perfectly to the comedic talents of Steve Martin, who had been a tour-de-force during the 1980s and was reaching a point when his mad-cap antics were giving way to something different. With Keaton playing his wife to perfection, and best bud Martin Short appearing as a hyperactive wedding planner, the film is still loved after three decades and for a certain generation is one of Martin’s best movies of the decade, if not his career.

While the film spawned a sequel – inexplicably called Father of the Bride Part 2 – in 2020, director Meyers shared an image of the movie’s poster on her Instagram account and suggested that a movie reunion could be on the cards. “If he thought a wedding was a lot, how would he react to 2020?” Meyers wrote in the caption. “Coming soon to the phone in your hand!”

As it turned out, there was no sequel in the works, but the cast did get together for a Netflix special in September 2020, when they reminisced about the making of the movie and the memories they had been left with. As for the film, a remake is currently in the works with Andy Garcia taking over Martin’s role as the titular father of the bride, with Brad Pitt’s Plan B producing and Gaz Alazraki directing. In a previous statement, Garcia expressed his excitement to be working on the Cuban American version of the movie. In a THR reported statement, Garcia said:

“I’m very excited to join The Father of the Bride, a beloved film that has brought so much joy to so many over the years and to represent my Cuban culture and heritage in this story. I commend Warner Brothers for their foresight and celebrate this opportunity they have created.”

While there are some who will bemoan yet another Hollywood remake, it should be pointed out that the original Father of the Bride was just over forty years old when the 1991 version was released, and we are now another three decades on, meaning that there will be few who are aware of the 1950 version existing, and probably not many more under a certain age who are aware of the 90s remake. There is a reason why remakes are a staple of Hollywood, and that is because it is a tried and tested way of putting well-loved stories in front of new audiences.
