Francis Ford Coppola Explains Megalopolis VFX Team Controversy

Francis Ford Coppola Explains Megalopolis VFX Team Controversy

The production and promotion of Francis Ford Coppola‘s Megalopolis has been fraught with controversy after controversy. Most recently, it was confirmed that the director attempted to kiss a female extra during shooting, and the film’s latest trailer opened with fake reviews, generated using AI, about Coppola’s past movies — which has now been removed from YouTube. While the string of controversies may feel like a recent event, these have been happening since the movie went into production, as the director fired the project’s entire VFX team halfway through shooting.

Speaking to Empire Magazine, Francis Ford Coppola explained why he parted with the project’s original VFX team. The director explained that it came down to creative differences. Coppola said himself and the team initially shared a common goal for the movie’s production design, which was inspired by the studio’s work on Edward Norton’s Motherless Brooklyn. However, when Coppola hired a separate concept artist to help him establish the visual tone of the movie, their professional relationship fell apart. He explained:

“Ultimately, Beth and I really didn’t share the same vision. We [later] disagreed, to a degree, that it was decided that the best thing would be if I hired a concept artist and came up with frames that showed what I wanted, which I did. The art department was frustrated because they felt I was evolving the look of the picture independently of them. They wanted giant sets and images. I wanted other elements like costumes and live effects to do some of the work and have it not all be art-department-centric. So, there was disagreement along those lines.”

Francis Ford Coppola Fired the VFX Team Because of Megalopolis’ Budget

Just like the controversies surrounding his movie’s productions, Francis Ford Coppola and budget issues go hand-in-hand. The director, who famously self-funds his films, is notorious for going over budget on his projects. For Megalopolis, the initial price tag was set at $120 million. However, Coppola was at risk of ballooning over to a figure close to $150 million. The director decided that firing a handful of members from the VFX team would help alleviate the budgetary pressure. However, it also upset the remaining VFX artists, who decided to unanimously quit the movie. Coppola continued:

“The picture was heading over budget [towards $148 million]. I said, ‘We have to now economize and make it much less expensive.’ The art department had a production designer, five art directors and a supervisor. It was very hierarchical. I said, ‘Let’s fire one of the five art directors,’ and they said, ‘Well, if you do that, we’ll all resign.’ And I did and they did. Then, of course, they bad-mouth us: ‘Oh, this picture is crazy.’ I thought the picture was going very well because I love the actors and I love the performances.”

While many movies would crumble under the weight of Megalopolis’s numerous controversies, it appears that Francis Ford Coppola is reveling in them. During a recent interview, the director said that he intentionally cast actors who had been “canceled” so that the movie didn’t feel like “some woke Hollywood production.”

Megalopolis
