Here’s a First Look of Viola Davis in The Woman King

TriStar Pictures has released the two new first look photos of The Woman King starring Viola Davis and Thuso Mbedu. Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Old Guard, Beyond the Lights), the film is inspired by true events that took place in The Kingdom of Dahomey, one of the most powerful states of Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries. The movie tells the story of Nanisca (Viola Davis), General of the all-female military unit, the Dahomey Amazons, and Nawi (Thuso Mbedu), an ambitious recruit, who together fought enemies who violated their honor, enslaved their people, and threatened to destroy everything they’ve lived for; The film recalls the final years of the Dahomey Amazons.

Prince-Bythewood wrote the final draft of the script with Dana Stevens, who also wrote the original screenplay. The film is produced by Cathy Schulman, Maria Bello, and Julius Tennon, Davis’s husband. Davis is set to produce the film as well. eOne co-financed and is handling distribution in the United Kingdom and Canada, with Tristar releasing the film in all other territories. The film was initially greenlit following the success of Black Panther. The new images show Davis as Nanisca, ready for battle with a sword raised in the air along with her troops. In another image, she leads a group of soldiers toward battle, guaranteeing an intense scene. In addition to the story, the film will serve to highlight a piece of history that has been disregarded due to years of colonialist and whitewashed narratives. The new images give a look into a film that brings life to a thrilling piece of history and adventure that has been ignored. The images were also released on the first day of Black History Month.

In a tweet, Davis shared her excitement by sharing the images while stating, “I’m deeply honored and excited to bring this incredible story of these badass female warriors to life. Get ready for THE WOMAN KING, exclusively in movie theaters this fall!!”

There is no trailer yet, but the premise, cast, and the first look photos are enough to endue excitement. The film hits theaters on September 16, 2022.
