James Gunn Confirms On-Set Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Cameo by SNL Star

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has seen plenty of cameo appearances that have gone under the radar, and one such blink-and-you-miss-it moment has happened with Saturday Night Live alum Pete Davidson in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. However, thanks to a behind the scenes image shared online, Davidson’s fleeting, one line appearance in the movie has now been revealed.

While there is a lot going on in the new Guardians of the Galaxy movie, even the most attentive audiences could be forgiven for missing the single line spoken by Davidson, which occurs in a scene when the Guardians rescue several “experiments” of the High Evolutionary. One of these pauses to thank Mantis for giving him his freedom – and this is the one line spoken by Davidson in the movie.

While Davidson’s name does appear in the movie’s credits, many struggled to place him in the film’s lengthy story. As it turns out, he did turn up on set to take part in the movie, and proves once again that when James Gunn is involved in a movie, there are plenty of people who want to be there with him. As one of several behind the scenes images, videos and pieces of test footage shared by the director, it helps piece together the way the film came together as one big collaborative effort, which is now being repaid by audience reactions to it.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Deilvers Plenty of Practical Effects.

Walt Disney Studios

While there is plenty of CGI on display in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, James Gunn loves nothing more than a good practical effect and animatronic where possible. Having shared numerous videos and short of both CGI tests and animatronic tests, it is clear how much work was put into making Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 look as good as it possibly could via a healthy mix of both.

In recent years, the MCU has been frequently ridiculed online for some dubious pieces of CGI, such as the hurried inclusion of Pip the Troll in Eternals, and MODOK in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania – although many have argued that if a giant floating head doesn’t look stupid then it hasn’t been done right. That is something Kevin Feige and his team will be looking to rectify in the coming years by seemingly taking a bit more time to perfect the on screen appearance of many characters and effects. This could also result in the additional use of practical effects, which would certainly not be a bad thing for the franchise’s visuals.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has already been hailed as one of the best MCU movies of recent years, and has made a big impact on the box office this weekend. While there is a lot of uncertainty over the power of the Marvel franchise to continue to bring huge audiences to theaters, the movie’s release has seemed to prove that even though there is a long way to go before the franchise hits the heights of Avengers: Endgame again, it is making the right moves in that direction.
