DC Studios has another reason to celebrate today. Following the Superman teaser trailer breaking records for a Warner Bros. release and receiving positive notices from fans, their animated streaming series, Creature Commandos, has been given a bit of good news just in time for Christmas.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Creature Commandos has officially been renewed for a second season. The news comes after the animated series garnered extremely positive reviews following its debut on Max earlier this month, registering a 95 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. DC Studios co-CEOS James Gunn and Peter Safran had this to say about the exciting renewal news:
“We’re thrilled to team up with Max for another season of Creature Commandos mayhem. From our spectacular first season of Peacemaker to the astonishing return of The Penguin to the record-breaking launch of Creature Commandos, Max has consistently delivered above industry expectations and beyond our wildest imaginings. Thank You, Casey, Sarah, Pia, Sono and the entire team for your tremendous support of DC Studios. We are proud to call Max home.”
The record-breaking tidbit mentioned by Gunn and Safran refers to the reveal that Creature Commandos became the third-most watched series in the first full week of release for any show on the Max streaming service, with a total of 22 million minutes. Amy Gravitt, EVP of HBO & Max Comedy Programming, was more than happy with those results as she praised the series following the news of its renewal. Gravitt said, “Only James Gunn could have conjured this wild band of misfit monsters who tug at your heart and force you to root passionately for them. We couldn’t be more delighted to continue their stories with James, Dean Lorey, Peter Safran and our fantastic partners at DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation.”
Creature Commandos is the First Installment of the New DC Universe
All seven episodes of Creature Commandos were written by Gunn, with Lorey serving as the series’ showrunner. The show serves as the first television series and first installment of the newly revamped DC Universe. It follows a black ops group of monsters that is assembled by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis). In addition to Davis, the series features the vocal talents of Indira Varma, Sean Gunn, Alan Tudyk, David Harbour, Zoë Chao and Frank Grillo, along with other famous names that appear on a recurring basis or as guest stars.

The newest episode of ‘Creature Commandos’ features James Gunn’s self-proclaimed saddest moment he’s ever written.
The series is based on the Creature Commandos team, who originally appeared in the pages of DC Comics courtesy of Weird War Tales #93 in 1980. Created by J.M. DeMatteis and Pat Broderick, the original team consisted of a human leader, a werewolf, a vampire, Frankenstein’s monster and a gorgon. The modern version of the team first appeared in 2000 in Creature Commandos #1-8, with this iteration being written by Tim Truman and drawn by Scot Eaton. While the full team hasn’t appeared in other media before, the team’s leader, General Matthew Shrieve, appeared in the third season of Arrow on The CW, portrayed by Marc Singer.
Creature Commandos can currently be streamed on Max.
