Julia Louis-Dreyfus Compares Her Veep Character to Donald Trump

Julia Louis-Dreyfus and her Veep co-stars reunited this week to support Kamala Harris ahead of the 2024 presidential election. The veteran actress portrayed Vice President Selina Meyer in the series, a role that garnered her nine Emmy Awards as star and producer. Fans have noted similarities between the character and Vice President Harris, but Louis-Dreyfus has stated that Meyer shares more similarities with Donald Trump than his political opponent, Deadline reports.

The acclaimed HBO political satire series Veep aired from 2012 to 2019 and has experienced a surge in viewership since President Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race and endorsed Harris as the Democratic nominee. Following this historic moment, the 2015 Season 3 episode, “Crate,” in which Meyer learns that the President is stepping down, and she is set to take over, quickly became a viral meme. Louis-Dreyfus appeared on MSNBC recently and noted that her unethical character shares a lot in common with Trump. She said:

“I do want to say one thing about the character I play on Veep. I do want to say I play a very, shall we say, almost narcissistic, sociopathic, mega-maniacal type of person. I am not a Kamala Harris type. I am possibly much more like someone from the other party whose name I shall not even utter.”

Louis-Dreyfus recently announced a virtual table read of the “Crate” episode featuring the cast to encourage voter mobilization for the former California senator. In the video alongside Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Ben Wikler, she said:

“What if we get the cast back together for a virtual table read of that episode, all in support of having Dems win up and down the ballot in Wisconsin?”

Veep Cast Reunite for Virtual Table Read to Support Harris

The Harris-inspired Veep live read and roundtable discussion streamed on Sunday, September 29, at 7 p.m. CT to benefit the Democratic Party of Wisconsin as Harris campaigns in the battleground state. Louis-Dreyfus and cast members Tony Hale, Anna Chlumsky, Reid Scott, Timothy Simons, Sam Richardson, Matt Walsh, Gary Cole, Sarah Sutherland, Clea DuVall, and Sufe Bradshaw performed a live read of the show’s third season episode. Stephen Colbert hosted the event, with special guests Larry David, Jason Alexander, and Kevin Smith. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Louis-Dreyfus said:

“We tried to find an old episode where President Meyer accused immigrants of eating dogs and cats. But back when we were making Veep, that seemed insane and over the top.”

Five years after the show’s conclusion, this timely resurgence of Veep highlights its continued relevance in today’s political landscape. Louis-Dreyfus remarked in an interview with The Times of London that the show highlights the scrutiny female candidates face compared to their male peers. In August, she committed to being more active in Harris’s campaign to defeat Trump in the upcoming election and spoke at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
