The star of the upcoming Batgirl movie can’t wait for the fans to see what they all have in store. Recently, the film wrapped shooting ahead of its expected premiere on HBO Max later this year as the film skips theaters to go straight to streaming. Leslie Grace stars in the lead role as Barbara “Babs” Gordon, the daughter of Commissioner James Gordon (J.K. Simmons) and protégé of Batman (Michael Keaton).
Grace spoke at length about the film in a new interview with Variety. She admits she managed to impress herself with the performance she delivered as Batgirl, exceeding her own expectations of what she was capable of. At the same time, she also spoke about the learning experience she had with sharing the screen with the likes of Simmons, Keaton, and Brendan Fraser, who plays the villain Firely. While Grace can’t divulge many details, she also teases the insanity that will be seen in the film.

“She definitely exceeds what I thought. I had to summon up some things in me that I didn’t even know were there… There’s some crazy stuff that happens. There’s lots of fire because as everyone knows by now, he plays Firefly. There’s crazy fire. There’s crazy stunts, crazy drops. She’s a biker chick, so you’re going to see her do a bunch of badassery… I couldn’t even believe that I was sharing space with Batman. I want to say more, but I can’t. It was insane.”
Does this mean we’ll be seeing a lot more of Grace in the role beyond this movie? That will depend upon how fans react to Batgirl, of course, but that doesn’t mean that preliminary discussions about Batgirl 2 haven’t started. Grace says that there’s so much storyline potential in this one movie that there are a lot of follow-up possibilities.
“We got to see this first one first. But there’s definitely some talks about what it could be. I’ve seen some of what we’ve shot, obviously in the playback and stuff like that, and it’s insane. We’ve already been talking about where do we take this from here because there’s so much that happens in this film. There are a lot of different themes in the plot that we touch on. It’s not just the action. There’s a love story. There’s this father-daughter relationship. There’s looking at the world through a lens that isn’t just black and white and seeing the color and the spectrum between things.”

“Scotland, thank u endlessly for welcoming us with open arms and gifting us the perfect city to create our Gotham,” Grace posted to Instagram when the film wrapped shooting. “It’s not the end yet but I didn’t want to miss a moment to say thank you as I’m sitting here reflecting on all we’ve gotten to experience thanks to you. I will never forget my time here.”
Batgirl doesn’t have an official premiere date set at this time but is expected to arrive on HBO Max in late 2022.
